| I admit being pretty much clueless about DVD storage. But I thought that
| the reason you could fit so much on a DVD had to do with multi layering,
| as opposed to a CD or MD which has just the single surface that the laser
| focuses on. Or do I not have an idea what I am talking about??

Paraphrased from the DVD FAQ:

The capacity increase is due to smaller pit length (~2.08x), tighter
tracks (~2.16x), slightly larger data area (~1.02x), more efficient
channel bit modulation (~1.06x), more efficient error correction
(~1.32x), and less sector overhead (~1.06x), for a total increase of
about 7 times the capacity of CD for a given area of media.

So yes, you could fit something like 100 minutes worth of 16-bit linear PCM
at 44.1KHz on a 2.5" DVD. Sounds a lot like MD2, doesn't it? Remember
what I said about a proprietary format not being allowed to use the DVD
marks? MD2 is not my hypothetical "Mini-DVD", but it is awfully close.
Sony has no reason to abandon MD2 for a spec that will probably never
exist, and having Sony behind a format is an absolute requirement.
