Hi, Martin, 

I think you'll find that most equipment with the digital optical output 
has the standard TOSLink connector.

I don't believe you'll have any problems getting the audio to record from 
your DVD player, so long as you have the TOSLink <-> Mini-optical cable 
(or some combo thereof).

My PC's sound card has the standard TOSLink optical out, and I purchased 
a TOSLink cable and a mini-optical adapter to fit into my MD recorder, 
and it works flawlessly.
