I don't blame you for your apprehension.
I think the newer Sony decks should be more reliable, as Sony has
changed the design of the optical blocks and also changed they way they
are calibrated. Now instead of a dozen tiny little mechanical controls
on a circuit board, all parameters are now adjusted electronically via
onscreen menus and stored in EEPROM. I think this makes them a lot more
reliable.
I picked the MD changer because I switched to a CD head unit. The
MDX-400 indash MD changer was an awesome unit, and the only Sony deck
with as many features was the CDX-C90 CD player. I'm happy with my
MDX-65 MD changer though, it holds more MD's than the MDX-400 (6 vs. 4)
and is very "stealth" but also still easy to access inside my center
console. So far it has been 100% trouble-free.
As for going to other brands, I don't know if they'll be any more
reliable. A lot of them seem to use Sony mechanisms (especially their
changers, I saw Clarion's changer looks identical to Sony's). That
means they use Sony optical blocks and are probably equally as prone to
failure, especially if they are the older design. It's possible they
may be more reliable though, CDX-C90 top of the line CD player w/ESP HAS
skipped before when my friend's cheapo Clarion's for a 1/4 the price
haven't skipped a beat. My Sony mobile ES CD changer has had problems
from the beginning and needs to be sent back for a SECOND warranty
repair.
I think if I weren't so fond of Sony's rotary commander joystick and
didn't need both an MD changer and CD changer together, I would probably
have gone with Clarion or Pioneer (Clarion & Pioneer MD changers are
EXPENSIVE compared to Sony's).
