The reason is quite simple really. People, in general, are very stupid.
For the better part of a decade Sony has sold MD players in the US with only
moderate success.
Now we have MP3, and the internet, and now you can buy portable MP3 players.
Now you can spend $150 for a Sony 64MB Memory Stick that holds *less* than
one MD that costs $1.50. Sony has realized that the stupidity of the public
is a very lucrative cash intake, and has thrown thier advertising force into
it. People will buy expensive, and crappy sounding players/storage because
MP3 is "hip", and MD is old technology. Nevermind which is actually better.
