I think you're being a little harsh on the original post here. I know MD
equipment is very expensive, and packing a lot of technology into a little
shiny box makes it relatively fragile. Obviously it's best to take care of
your kit. But accidents happen to the best of us, and I don't think it's
unreasonable to expect durability in these units. And, in answer to the
original post, yes it certainly seems that some units are just designed
better for durability than others.

For e.g., my portable unit for 2 years, a Sony E-25, has survived a few
knocks, drops and bumps. The exterior is no longer pristine but it still
works which is the important thing. I'd recommend it and other Sony units
of its era (c. R30s - R50s) for durability (although a little behind the
8-ball in features due to age). So Sony's per se are not necessarily
delicate.

>From reports I've heard, it seems that Sony's of the R55-R90 era are less
durable, but I have two friends with R900s and the R900 seems to be a
durable and well designed machine. I'd still consider the R900 in your
quest, I think you'd find it to be a totally different generation of Sony to
the E33 and the R55.

As to Panasonic and Sharp, can't comment much there, although I was looking
at a Panasonic MR100 a while back and was put off that there was no level
adjustment, just high and low sensitivity - I'm not sure whether this is a
problem or whether it has been carried over to the new units. One point to
consider is that we must be due in the next couple of months for some new
units so it might be worth waiting to see what comes through before buying.

>Oh, and incidentally, "Walkman" is a Sony brand and registered
>trademark, so if you don't want a Sony then you're not looking for a
>MD Walkman, but for a portable MD player.

This comment on the original post, while literally true, IMHO was a little
unnecessary. We all know what the original post meant. Whatever your point
of view, let's keep the comments civil and constructive and avoid pedantry.
