That's why i'm now mostly using lame vbr. this mostly gives me average
bitrates of 160-220 kbps (depending on the source music) which sounds
equally if not better than 320 kbps cbr files. Also with cd-r having upto
700 mb of storage capacity even 320 kbps leaves lots of music space ! (when
compared to md's ~150 mb)

I think the standard is upto each person for themselfs. On crappy
pc-speakers 128 or 256 kbps won't make that much of a difference. But for
people like me who have a (DVD/)MP3 player in their stereo setup i guess
the 'general accepted' standard is a lot higher than 128. Plus that since
it's a standard with the variable bitrate already in there, all player
which are compliant can play it.

But you aren't (thanks to sony...). That's one of the pre's of mp3 over md.
