+1 for the MDT documentation, it's very extensive and explains a lot of the concepts. Just take a day and read it all. :)

Once you are comfortable with the end-to-end process, then you can figure out how it all works :) There are conditions on steps and groups that cause them to be skipped in some scenarios.
