I think (correct me if I'm wrong, John) is that he's installed ADK 8.1 and is attempting to install MDT 2012 Update 1 (based on the subject line) and that is what tripped the error he captured.
If you are going to use MDT 2012 then you are limited to ADK 8.0. MDT 2012 won't recognize ADK 8.1.
