In-place upgrades (and service packs) can't be done offline. Generally I would copy the install bits locally and then kick off the in-place upgrade from there. Yes, it takes a while to get the bits there, but that can be done in advance so that the upgrade goes through as quickly as possible. (And hopefully you have some way to remotely access the system, should anything go wrong :))
