Sorry if this is unrelated and just noise, but it sounds very similar to
something I've been wondering about. I bought my wife one of the HP Stream
units. Very nice little system and handles everything she needs. One thing I
did notice was that when I first booted it up, the OS only took 7-8 GB of the
onboard storage. After I patched, it took a substantially larger chunk. I'm
postulating that the WIM boot is the main reason, as all the patches are now
deltas from the WIM. If they could be applied to the WIM itself, then I would
expect to be able to recover that storage. Given that they only 32GB to start
and aren't upgradable, that might be a worthwhile exercise at some point should
things get particularly tight on space.

Subject: RE: [MDT-OSD] Offline Patching - Upgrade OS

I wrote my own LTIAppy.wsf to do an offline in-place upgrade. It works well. I
might do a blog post about it someday if I ever get the time.

I'm just wondering if I can swap out the RTM .wim for an RTM .WIM that has the
latest patches staged via DISM. Sounds like Keith was looking into it in his
blog post but didn't try it.

Thank you,
-Brett

In-place upgrades (and service packs) can't be done offline.

Generally I would copy the install bits locally and then kick off the in-place
upgrade from there. Yes, it takes a while to get the bits there, but that can
be done in advance so that the upgrade goes through as quickly as possible.
(And hopefully you have some way to remotely access the system, should anything
go wrong :))

Thanks,
-Michael

Subject: [MDT-OSD] Offline Patching - Upgrade OS

I was reading this blog post and had a question:
https://keithga.wordpress.com/2014/10/29/offline-patching-with-help-from-mdt/
(Hello Keith)

Has anybody tried to do an in-place upgrade process with Offline Images
(dism.exe patching)? I don't really want to go through the whole process of
testing it if somebody has already tried it.

I'm thinking about trying it with a Win2003 -> Win2008 upgrade. Currently using
MDT 2012 Update 1 to perform an in-place upgrades but the WSUS servers are
located across the WAN and is slowing down the deployment.

Thanks!
-Brett
