This is how I do it with PowerShell and using SCCM only. This is to set the
default IE site.
$site = “www.google.com”
log ("Setting Default IE home/site: $site")
& REG LOAD HKLM\DEFAULT C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT
Push-Location 'HKLM:\DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer'
if (!(Test-Path Main)) {
New-Item Main
}
Set-ItemProperty -Path .\Main -Name "Start Page" -Value $site
Pop-Location
0 #needed to unload hive
[gc]::Collect() # necessary call to be able to unload registry hive
REG UNLOAD HKLM\DEFAULT

Not that I remember, unless you want to use Copy profile which I would
recommend avoiding. I normally don't touch the xml in MDT builds.

are there phases of unattend.xml that run in a mode that would let a reg
command affect the default registry hive?
could I just add a run synchronous to one of its phases?

I would place a script at startup folder of default user that makes the changes
and deletes itself after or tag the registry with GPO. I've used both methods.

I am getting used to using LTI for my Build and capture – was previously using
Configmgr+MDT.
I need to make some mods to the default user registry. With Configmgr+MDT,
since the TS runs as system, it was easy to just script the edits of HKCU
because it was the default registry. Now that I am running as “administrator”
instead of System, I am not sure how to edit the default user registry hive. I
am used to just applying registry edits and having them apply as SYSTEM/Default.
Do I have to load the default hive, edit it and then unload it, or is there an
easier way? I think there used to be copyprofile in olden times before task
sequences existed… Does that still exist? Is that the way? I am reading more
about copyprofile and it sounds complicated and only marginally functional.
(for reference what I am really trying to do… I need to disable OneDrive setup
– need to remove it from the default profile so that Onedrive doesn’t run. I
know there’s a GP for turning it off, but occasionally those GPOs don’t apply
on first logon and then it is too late – so I want to turn it off in the base
image to ensure it has little chance of accidentally being active for any
users.)
