6.1 magnitude quake jolts Maluku
Ambon (ANTARA News) - A magnitude 6.1 quake jolted Maluku province at around
11.30 pm local time (9.30 pm Western Indonesian Time) on Thursday causing panic
among residents.

The head of the local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, Beni Sipolo, said the
epicenter of the quake was located at 3.69 degrees South Latitude and 127.05
degress East Longitude in a depth of 58 kilometers close to Buru Island waters,

He said the quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami and therefore
he called on the people to remain calm.

He said he had received no report of damage or casualties.

Many people in the provincial capital Ambon rushed out of their homes for fear
of the quake that lasted for around three minutes.

"I have just turned off my television and was about to go to bed when suddenly
I felt a strong tremor and the glass windows rattle, so I immediately rushed my
children out of the house," Rudy Rumte, a resident of the town said.(*)
