Karbon adalah jurnal yang membahas permasalahan senirupa kontemporer serta
hubungannya dengan fenomena sosial-urban di Indonesia, diterbitkan oleh
ruangrupa; sebuah artists initiative yang didirikan tahun 2000 oleh sekelompok
seniman dari Jakarta. Sepanjang tahun 2000-2006, Karbon telah menerbitkan 7
edisi dalam format buku dengan menggunakan dua bahasa (Indonesia & Inggris).
Mulai tahun 2007, Karbon mengubah formatnya menjadi www.karbonjournal.org,
sebuah jurnal dalam bentuk website yang mengeluarkan artikel baru setiap dua
bulan. Karbon mengembangkan pembahasannya pada praktek senirupa sebagai analisa
untuk memetakan hubungan dengan fenomena sosial, serta menelaah
permasalahan-permasalahan urban dan budaya visual dalam ruang-ruang kota dengan
sudut pandang yang luas secara lintas disiplin.
Selain menerbitkan artikel baru setiap dua bulan sekali, Karbon juga
menampilkan beberapa artikel pilihan dari edisi cetak Karbon 2000-2006
sebelumnya.
VOLUME 1: RUMAH
Selama enam tahun, Karbon telah membahas seni kontemporer dalam tujuh edisi
cetak. Mulai tahun 2007 ini, Karbon mengubah diri menjadi jurnal online, dan
akan lebih membahas tentang kota dalam konteks studi urban dan budaya visual.
Sementara pembahasan seni kontemporer akan lebih dipandang sebagai materi
analisa, terutama melihat kenyataan bahwa selama ini seni kontemporer lebih
banyak mendapatkan inspirasi dari permasalahan kota dan budaya visual, daripada
kehidupan kota yang mengambil manfaat dari seni kontemporer.
Dalam edisi perdana ini Karbon menampilkan tema Rumah, sebagai ruang
pertama yang mengawali semua aktivitas kota. Dalam artikelnya, Darrundono
menyatakan bahwa rumah susun belum diperlukan di kota Jakarta. Sementara Farabi
Fakih meneliti citra kelas menengah pasca Orde Baru dalam memandang tempat
tinggal mereka. Kami juga melakukan wawancara dengan Lintas Tebet, sebuah
majalah komunitas di Tebet, Jakarta Selatan yang pernah terbit pada 2002-2003.
Serta mengenai rumah yang liat dan kuat pasca gempa Yogyakarta, tahun 2006
lalu. Artikel ditutup dengan ulasan Apartment Project, sebuah proyek seni yang
diadakan ruangrupa pada 2003 tentang fenomena rumah vertikal di kota Jakarta.
Karbon akan menampilkan enam artikel baru setiap dua bulan yang terangkum
dalam satu tema. Kami sangat terbuka dengan semua ide dan kritik Anda, agar
permasalahan kota tidak selamanya menjadi wacana yang asing dan hanya dimiliki
oleh kota-kota besar, tapi terjadi dalam keseharian sebagai sesuatu yang sangat
realistis namun justru nyaris mustahil dalam pemecahannya. Semoga Karbon dapat
menjadi awal untuk membuka ruang diskusi yang lebih luas.
Mencari Model Pembangunan Perumahan yang Berkelanjutan oleh Darrundono
[...] Tujuan pembangunan rumah susun adalah pengentasan kemiskinan dan
kekumuhan. Apa yang terjadi kemudian, dalam waktu singkat, adalah munculnya
pergeseran kelompok sasaran. Lebih daripada 90% penghuni rumah susun ternyata
adalah golongan menengah, dan ini berarti pemerintah memberikan subsidi
terus-menerus terhadap kelompok yang seharusnya tidak perlu dan tidak pantas
mendapatkannya. Rumah susun kemudian menjadi monumen kekumuhan bertingkat, yang
berarti tidak berkelanjutan dan memerlukan subsidi terus-menerus [...]

[...] Zaman pascakrisis adalah zaman saat seseorang tidak memikirkan bahwa
sebuah rumah itu bagus jika bisa diperluas seiring dengan penambahan jumlah
anak. Eksekutif muda kita mungkin telah dipecat pada 1997, tetapi jika tidak;
dia telah memilih untuk tinggal di rumah gaya Italia di sebuah perumahan di
Bekasi. Rumah-rumah itu tentunya berbentuk cluster, karena bentuk itu lebih
menjamin keamanan dari kota Jakarta yang makin tidak aman tiap tahunnya.
Melebihi rasa nyaman, asri dan lainnya; perasaan bahwa kelas kita adalah kelas
ekslusif yang harus melindungi dirinya dari massa yang terus menerus
mengancam. Ada satu hal yang saya rasakan amat kuat dalam membaca iklan-iklan
ini: bahwa masa depan sudah tidak lagi menjadi bagian dari pertimbangan,
setidaknya, masa depan yang Indonesia. [...]

Karbon is a journal discussing about the issues of the contemporary art and
their relation with the urban-social phenomena in Indonesia, published by
ruangrupa, an artists initiative founded in the year 2000 by a group of
Jakarta based artists. In the period of 20002006, Karbon has published seven
bilingual editions (Indonesian and English) in book form. Since 2007, Karbon
changes its format to become a web media at www.karbonjournal.org, producing
new articles every two month. Karbon expands the discourse it addresses to the
issues on the art practices, as an analyses to map their relations with the
social phenomena, and to examine the issues of the urban and the visual
cultures in city spaces, with various point of views.
Beside publishing new articles every two month, Karbon also display some
selected printed version articles from KARBON 2000-2006 edition
VOLUME 1: HOUSE
For six years, Karbon has been discussing about the contemporary art in seven
print editions. Starting this 2007, Karbon will turn into an online journal and
focus more on the city within the context of urban studies and the visual
culture. Meanwhile, the discussions about the contemporary art will be viewed
more as a material for analyses, especially if we consider the fact that the
contemporary art has been drawing on problems of the city and the visual
culture for inspirations, more than the citys having taken advantages from the
contemporary art.
In this initial edition, Karbon runs the theme of House, which is the first
space that begins all activities in the city. In his article, Darrundono states
that apartments are not yet needed in Jakarta, while Farabi Fakih analyzes how
the post-New Order middle class view their house. We also interview one of the
editors of Lintas Tebet, or Across Tebet, a community magazine in Tebet, South
Jakarta, which was published in 2002 to 2003. We also run an interview about
the tough and sturdy house after the 2006 earthquake in Yogyakarta. The edition
closes with a review of the Apartment Project, an art project that ruangrupa
conducted in 2003 about the phenomenon of the vertical houses in Jakarta.
Karbon will present six new articles every two months, gathered under a
unifying theme. We are open for your ideas and criticism, so that the problems
of the city do not remain an alien discourse and owned merely by big cities;
rather, they take place in our daily lives, realistically but almost impossible
to solve. Hopefully Karbon can serve as a beginning for broader discussions.
Seeking a Sustainable Model for Housing Development by Darrundono
[...] The development of high rises aims to eradicate poverty and slums. What
took place later on, in just a short time, was a shift in the targeted
population. More than 90% of the people who lived in the high rises were the
middle class people, and this meant that the government continuously subsidized
the people who neither needed nor deserved the subsidy. High rises then became
a monument of stacked-up slums, with the consequences that they were
unsustainable and required continuous subsidies.[. ..]
Beautiful Indonesia House by Farabi Fakih
[...] The post crisis era is the time when one does not think that a house is
good if we can make it bigger according to the increasing number of children
living there. Our young executive might have been fired in 1997, but if not, he
has chosen to live in an Italian-style house in a housing complex in Bekasi.
The houses in the area where he lives of course form a cluster of houses,
because such an arrangement provides better sense of security from the
increasingly unsafe Jakarta. Overriding the feeling of comfort and the sense of
beauty is the sense that our class is an exclusive class that must be protected
from the continuing threat of the masses. As I read those ads, there is a
strong sense that the future is no longer a part of the consideration, at least
when it comes to the Indonesian future. [...]
Tebet Has It All

[...] But Tebet is a comfortable place, anyway. Its in South Jakarta, but
not far from the center of the city. Its quite comfortable to walk around and
bike in the area. There are some places that cant be reached by public
transportations such as in the green belt areabut in general public
transportations are quite accessible. There were oh-so-many places where you
can eat out, and security isnt a problem. There are deficiencies, indeed, but
its normalthis is Jakarta, anyway. Compared to other places, Tebet is more
comfortable, especially because its so heterogeneous. [...]
