ELECTIONS AND VOTING:
America Votes: Democrats Win Control of the US House
America Votes: Democrats Win Control of the US House
6.15pm Wednesday November 8, 2006
The New Zealand Herald
<http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10409757>
WASHINGTON - A disappointed President George W. Bush is to urge his
opponents to work with him after the Democrats seized control of the House
of Representatives today.
Democrats swept Republicans out of power in the US House of
Representatives today riding public doubts about the war in Iraq and
President George W Bush's leadership to victory.
The win is likely to slam the brakes on Bush's legislative agenda in his
final two years, make Democrat Nancy Pelosi the first female Speaker of
the House and give Democrats a chance to investigate his administration's
most controversial policy decisions such as the war in Iraq.
Two years after a decisive election victory for Bush and his Republicans,
Democrats picked up the 15 seats they needed to recapture control of the
435-seat House for the first time since 1994.
White House spokesman Tony Snow said the outcome of the elections was "not
what we would've hoped."
"But it also gets us to a point: Democrats have spent a lot of time
complaining about what the president has done. This is an opportunity for
them to kind of stand up," Snow said.
Bush, whose Iraq policy was a key factor in the elections, had dinner with
top aides and close friends Brad Freeman and Don Evans, the former
commerce secretary, and watched the election returns on television in the
White House.
He was told formally by his top political adviser, Karl Rove, that the
House had gone to the Democrats.

A Whopper of a Legal Problem for Burger King
Police Officers Sue Burger King Over Marijuana on Burgers
The Associated Press

<http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1162893920488>
Two police officers in New Mexico have sued Burger King Corp., claiming
they were served hamburgers that had been sprinkled with marijuana.
The lawsuit says Mark Landavazo and Henry Gabaldon, officers for the
Isleta Pueblo tribal police, were in uniform and riding in a marked patrol
car when they bought meals at the drive-through lane Oct. 8 of a Burger
King restaurant in Los Lunas, N.M.
The officers ate about half of their burgers before discovering marijuana
on the meat, the lawsuit said. They used a field test kit to confirm the
substance was pot, then went to a hospital for medical evaluations.

That proposal to outlaw trans fats in New York City restaurants grabbed
most of the attention, but the citys Board of Health has another proposal
that some fast-food restaurants are resisting. They shouldnt.
The board wants fast-food restaurants to list the calories of all
their offerings on menus and menu boards on the premises. It should be
easy to do - McDonalds already does so on its Web site, on the back of
tray liners and in brochures in the restaurants. (Toppings might have to
be listed separately, but that should be easy, too.)
Much of the industry is unwisely resisting the idea. It could help
keep the food police in bounds.
The activists probably will succeed on trans fats. There are many good
substitutes and the harm they do when consumed in large amounts over time
is clear.
<snip>
If youve informed your customer, it weakens any future plaintiff
argument that he could not know that his conduct was harmful.
Indeed, obesity is rising. Too many people are unhealthily dependent
on fast food. But nobody forces it on them. The best answer is education,
which would dovetail with the calorie-posting proposal.

BREAKING NEWS: Rumsfeld Replaced After Poll Loss
Rumsfeld Replaced After Poll Loss
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is standing down, President George W
Bush has announced after bruising losses for Republicans in mid-term
elections.
BBC News
Last Updated: Wednesday, 8 November 2006, 19:46 GMT
<http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6130296.stm>
Mr Bush said that both he and Mr Rumsfeld had agreed the time was right
for new leadership at the Pentagon.
Former CIA Director Robert Gates has been nominated to replace Mr
Rumsfeld.
The Democrats won control of the House of Representatives in the polls,
and the Senate balance of power hangs on a tight race in just one state,
Virginia.
Mr Bush said that his administration's Iraq policy was "not working well
enough, fast enough", and that Mr Rumsfeld agreed that a "fresh
perspective" was needed on the issue.

IRAQI lawmakers welcomed the resignation of US Defence Secretary Donald
Rumsfeld overnight, saying they held him responsible for many of the
war-torn country's ongoing woes.
Politicians were unanimous in their pleasure at seeing the controversial
American politician, one of the architects of the US-led invasion of Iraq,
move on.
"The resignation came late," said venerable Shiite politician Mahmud
Othman. "He should have made it right after the scandal of Abu Ghraib in
the Spring of 2004.
