Unique Library for a Unique School

Without taking anything away from the artwork or research potential, the
greatest benefit to users of the Gelber Library is undoubtedly its
impressive collection, which makes it, for Hobbins, "unlike any other
Canadian academic law library." It is a collection based on a policy
developed by the librarians that reflects the unique nature of the law
school it serves.

In 1998, McGill's Faculty of Law adopted what is known as a trans-systemic
approach, whereby both common law and the civil law are studied together,
with an emphasis placed on legal traditions, comparative law and the
internationalization of law. The library had to suit this reality. "Other
libraries offer professional training for a particular jurisdiction we
don't really do that," explained Hobbins, adding, "We tend to look at law
as an academic discipline rather than as professional training for the
bar." That attitude echoes the underlying philosophy of the law school.

The Gelber Library spends a larger portion of its budget than most law
libraries on books and monographs, as opposed to "continuations"
journals, serials, periodicals. In so doing, it supports research (rather
than training) and intensive study that is international in scope. When
choosing additions to the comparative foreign collection, for example,
Hobbins refers to the FIGS rule French, Italian, German, Spanish
representing some of the more important civil jurisdictions in the world.

The library also boasts a remarkable rare-book trove, kept in a
climate-controlled room that houses the Wainwright Collection, primarily
the work of early French jurists on pre-Napoleonic Civil Law, and the
Canadiana collection of early Canadian, British and American titles.

(CBS News) NEW YORK Veteran "60 Minutes" correspondent Ed Bradley died of
complications from leukemia Thursday morning at Mount Sinai Hospital in
New York. He was 65.

Bradley joined the staff of the venerable news magazine 26 years ago. His
consummate skills as a broadcast journalist and his distinctive body of
work were recognized with numerous awards, including 19 Emmys, the latest
for a segment that reported the reopening of the 50-year-old racial murder
case of Emmett Till.

In a special report, CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Katie
Couric said Bradley was "considered intelligent, smooth, cool, a great
reporter, beloved and respected by all his colleagues here at CBS News."

"He certainly was a reporter's reporter," fellow "60 Minutes"
correspondent Mike Wallace told CBS News Radio.

He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement award from the National
Association of Black Journalists. Three of his Emmys came at the 2003
awards: a Lifetime Achievement Emmy; one for a "60 Minutes" report on
brain cancer patients, "A New Lease on Life;" and another for his hour on
"60 Minutes II" about sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, The Catholic
Church on Trial."

Bradleys "60 Minutes" interview with condemned Oklahoma City bomber
Timothy McVeigh was the only television interview ever given by the man
guilty of one of the worst terrorist acts on American soil; it also earned
Bradley an Emmy.

His reporting on the worst school shooting in American history, Columbine
(April 2001), revealed on "60 Minutes II" that authorities ignored telling
evidence with which they might have prevented the massacre.
