Universities Move to Hide Work from U.S. Eyes
Patriot Act prompts institutions to switch to Canadian server for online
research

Concerned about the U.S. government's prying eyes, a number of Canadian
universities are changing the way their professors and students conduct
online research.

Many university libraries subscribe to RefWorks, a popular U.S.-based
Internet tool that allows academics and students to create personal
accounts and store research information, as well as generate citations and
bibliographies.

But the Patriot Act -- which grew out of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks
and which potentially allows U.S. authorities to sweep through databases
such as RefWorks -- has prompted Canadian postsecondary institutions to
abandon the American server for one housed at the University of Toronto.

"There is certainly concern within Canadian university libraries. It's a
concern about a foreign country having access to your personal information
without good cause," said William Maes, librarian at Dalhousie University
in Halifax. "That's the devious thing of the Patriot Act, they can do this
without letting anybody know."

With RefWorks, professors and students set up personal accounts on the
U.S. database and can then save journal titles for their research records.
Amid heightened fears about terrorist activities, Canadian university
officials worry that if the research is of a sensitive nature, it could be
misunderstood.

This is a Net-Gold research update.

LIBRARY: RESEARCH :
SCIENCE: RESEARCH:
Peeping Into Library Research at a New URL is Not the Same as a Peep at
Researching Peeps

The library occassionally has been viewed as a peep show and this website
at a new location highlights peeping at library research techniques.

Peep Research: A Study of Small Fluffy Creatures and Library Usage
<http://www.millikin.edu/staley/peeps/>

About This Project and Website Contents

"Although scientific and health research has been conducted on Peeps, most
notably that appearing on the Peep Research website (see
http://www.peepresearch.org), we have noted an absence of research
focusing on the ability of Peeps themselves to actually do research. To
address this lack, we invited a small group of Peeps to visit Staley
Library at Millikin University during the week of March 17-21, 2003 so
that we could more closely observe their research practices. This was
determined to be an ideal week for the Peeps to visit the library, as
Millikin University students were on spring break. The research that
follows documents their visit to the library and provides some evaluative
commentary on our assessment of Peeps and library usage."

    * Peeps arrival at the library
    * Beginning research
    * Advanced research skills
    * Peeps and library behavior
    * Feasibility of peeps and library usage
    * Completing the research activity
    * Addendum
    * About this project

It should be noted that library using peeps need to be dressed so as to
avoid to much exposure to air as air exposure may cause their research
techniques to become a bit Staley.

It is, however, possible to abuse peep research techniques and the abuses
seem to grow over time, with new focuses on Peeps: Smoking and Alcohol and
with Peep Surgery in the astonishing case of siamese quadtuplets.

It also must be noted that this is not rigorous and hard scientific
research, but rather the marshmellow soft level of scientific rigor.

Peeps: Those Resilient Little Birds
<http://www.peepresearch.org/>

Basic Science: Our first studies focused on basic attributes and reactions
of Peeps to simple conditions and stimuli.

    * -Reaction to cold
    * -Reaction to heat
    * -Solubility testing
    * -Low-pressure environments

Our subjects: Before any testing begins, all peep subjects are thoroughly
examined and sign a disclosure form explaining the potential risks of
their volunteer service.

New Research into Peep Health

Peep Health: Perhaps one of the most under-represented areas of study
worldwide, issues of Peep well-being are only now making their way into
the mainstream consciousness.

    * Risk Analysis: Investigating the effects of smoking and alcohol on
Peep health.
<http://www.peepresearch.org/smoking.html>

    * Medical Miracle! Quintuplet Peep siblings, conjoined at birth, have
been separated through this daring application of modern medicine!
<http://www.peepresearch.org/surgery.html>

    * Fear Response: Discover what causes this dramatic Peep behavior.
<http://www.peepresearch.org/fear.html>

As found in all quality science research, the peep scientific research
studies are accompanied by an extensive and thorough literature review,
the least one could expect from funded scientific research of this
caliber.

Science and Peep-Related Links
<http://www.peepresearch.org/links.html>

To discuss these research projects in more detail there may be somebody
named Tom who may be contacted with some effort. Such collaboration may
be needed as even in the field of Peep Research, change and growth seem to
be major aspects of the efforts in the Peep Studies.

All who have read the above, discretion please, not a peep about this
post to a soul, as I was kind of winging this peep content.

This is an update to this wing breaking prior Net-Gold post.

5. TRANSPORTATION: TROLLEY TRAIN SUBWAY LIGHT RAIL BUS CITY: Chestnut

TRANSPORTATION: TROLLEY TRAIN SUBWAY LIGHT RAIL BUS CITY:
Chestnut Hill (Philadelphia) Route 23 Trolley Exhibit

Chestnut Hill (Philadelphia) Route 23 Trolley Exhibit
23 Trolley Exhibit is on the right track at CHHS
by ANN HENDERSON HART
The Chestnut Hill Local
<http://www.chestnuthilllocal.com/issues/2006.11.09/locallife3.html>

This exhibit features artifacts from the 23 Trolley Car, relevant vintage
black and white photographs, old advertisements, ornate stock issues and
two watercolor paintings of the trolley by renowned artist Paul Rickert.

Children will enjoy seeing an original pay token box, a trolley bell, red
stop light and a miniature 23 Trolley model set up in a bay window. The
gallery, which historical society director George Lyons repainted in the
familiar yellow, green and red trolley colors, follows a chronological
progression.

Electric trolleys were introduced to Philadelphia in the early 1890s and
grew to a fleet of 4,000 by 1911, according to Allen Meyers and Joel
Spivak in their book, Philadelphia Trolleys. For a time, every section of
Philadelphia could be reached by trolley car along 86 regular routes.
While a few trolley car lines remain, most have been replaced by buses.

Times have changed. Many of our citys trolley cars were sold to San
Francisco. But is this progress? George Lyons, for one, laments the end of
the 23 Trolley.

Light rail has been the heart and soul of American cities like San
Francisco, Portland and New Orleans, he said. The city is being
shortsighted in turning its back on the light rail system in favor of
fuel-hungry buses.
