About the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC)
<http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/html/about/about.shtml>

"The Landmarks Preservation Commission is the New York City agency that
is responsible for identifying and designating the City's landmarks and
the buildings in the City's historic districts. The Commission also
regulates changes to designated buildings.

The agency consists of eleven Commissioners and a full-time staff.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission was established in 1965 when Mayor
Robert Wagner signed the local law creating the Commission and giving it
its power. The Landmarks Law was enacted in response to New Yorkers'
growing concern that important physical elements of the City's history
were being lost despite the fact that these buildings could be reused.

Events like the demolition of the architecturally distinguished
Pennsylvania Station in 1963 increased public awareness of the need to
protect the city's architectural, historical, and cultural heritage."

Comment:

This website, not unlike the site map for the City Government of New York
City does an excellent job of hiding valuable content on both the Landmark
site itself and on the website for the city government itself. I was
unable to locate the Landmark Commission site on the site map for the city
government.

More importantly, failure to use the site search engine for the Landmark
Commission will it would seem cause the site visitor to miss most of the
valuable content on this site, indeed books and reports in the hundreds of
pages in substantial quantity.

Search the site search engine for concepts like building, buildings,

terminal, trolley, library and the like to uncover many documents with
long reports and excellent photographs.

Joseph Barbera, Legendary Animator, Dies

Joseph Barbera, 95, animator who once applied to Disney
By DAVID ITZKOFF The New York Times

<http://thechronicleherald.ca/NovaScotia/549134.html>

Joseph Barbera, an innovator of animation who teamed with William Hanna to
give generations of young television viewers a pantheon of beloved
characters, including Tom and Jerry, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound and the
Flintstones, died Monday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 95.

A spokesman for Warner Brothers said he died of natural causes, The
Associated Press reported.

Barbera and the studio he founded with Hanna, Hanna-Barbera Productions,
became synonymous with television animation, yielding more than 100
cartoon series over four decades, including Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?,
Jonny Quest and The Smurfs.

On signature televisions shows like The Flintstones and The Jetsons, the
two men developed a cartoon style that combined colourful, simply drawn
characters (often based on other recognizable pop-culture personalities)
with the narrative structures and joke-telling techniques of traditional
live-action sitcoms.

They were televisions first animated comedy programs.

Before that, Barbera and Hanna had worked together on more than 120
hand-drawn cartoon shorts for MGM, dozens of which starred the archetypal
cat-and-mouse team Tom and Jerry.

The Hanna-Barbera collaboration lasted more than 60 years.

During the 1940s, Barbera and Hanna were MGM's blue-ribbon cartoon
directors, winning seven Oscars for the "Tom and Jerry" shorts. After MGM
closed its animation unit in 1957, they moved to television, where they
created a series of hits in the 1960s, beginning with "The Flintstones,"
the first animated series in prime time.

By the 1970s, Hanna-Barbera was the dominant studio in Saturday morning
cartoons, making shows for the three major networks and accounting for as
much as 70% of the so-called kid-vid programming in some seasons.

"Joe Barbera was a passionate storyteller and a creative genius who, along
with his late partner Bill Hanna, helped pioneer the world of animation,"
Sander Schwartz, president of Warner Bros. Animation, said in a statement.
"Bill created a landmark television production model and Joe filled it
with funny, original show ideas and memorable characters that will stand
for all time as his ultimate legacy."

During their six-decade partnership, Barbera and Hanna produced more than
300 series for network and syndicated TV. They also adapted comic books
and live-action series and made theatrical features, direct-to-video
releases and TV specials.

Joseph Barbera, Legendary Animator, Dies

Joe Barbera was born March 24, 1911, in New York City. He tried his hand
at many professions that included banking and illustrating magazines
before stumbling into animation. In 1937, he moved to Hollywood to join
the fledgling MGM animation unit. It was there that Barbera meet Bill
Hanna.

Media critic Leonard Maltin says the two made a natural team.

"When you are dealing with 24 frames a second, a gag has to be timed to
the split second," Maltin says. "Bill Hanna had that skill. Joe Barbera's
great strength was gags... no one was faster or more inventive or more
precise than Joe Barbera."

Hanna and Barbera's first MGM cartoon, Puss Gets the Boots, was released
in 1940. It was not only a hit but it was the first cartoon featuring a
cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry.

Hanna-Barbera went on to work exclusively on the Tom and Jerry series for
the next 17 years, until MGM closed down the animation unit in 1957.

"From the Stone Age to the Space Age and from primetime to Saturday
mornings, syndication and cable, the characters he created with his late
partner, William Hanna, are not only animated superstars, but also a very
beloved part of American pop culture," Warner Bros. chairman and chief
executive Barry Meyer said.

Hanna, who died in 2001, once said he was never a good artist but his
partner could "capture mood and expression in a quick sketch better than
anyone I've ever known."

The two first teamed cat and mouse in the short "Puss Gets the Boot." It
earned an Academy Award nomination, and MGM let the pair keep
experimenting until the full-fledged Tom and Jerry characters were born.

Jerry was borrowed for the mostly live-action musical "Anchors Aweigh,"
dancing with Gene Kelly in a scene that became a screen classic.

After MGM folded its animation department in the mid-1950s, Hanna and
Barbera were forced to go into business for themselves. With television's
sharply lower budgets, their new cartoons put more stress on verbal wit
than the detailed -- and expensive -- action featured in theatrical
cartoon.

Their "Flintstones" was the first animated series on prime-time
television. Like "The Simpsons" three decades later, "The Flintstones"
found success in prime-time by not limiting its reach to children. The
program, a parody of "The Honeymooners," was among the 20 most popular
shows on television during the 1960-61 season, and Fred's shout of "yabba
dabba doo!" entered the language.

The Jetsons, which debuted in 1962, were the futuristic mirror image of
the Flintstones.

"It was a family comedy with everyday situations and problems that we
window-dressed with gimmicks and inventions," Mr. Barbera said. The show
ran just one season on network TV but was often rerun, and the characters
were revived in the 1980s in a syndicated show. Mr. Barbera said he liked
the freedom syndication gave the producers, with none of the meddling from
network executives.

Animator who, with William Hanna, created a host of classic cartoons that

In 20th-century animation the names of Joseph Barbera and William Hanna
ranked second only to that of Walt Disney in terms of public recognition.
At MGM in the 1940s they created a cartoon-character partnership that was
to prove as durable as their own a cat and mouse caught up in a
never-ending cycle of surreal mayhem. Tom and Jerry delighted audiences,
while prompting concerns about the level and nature of violence. Tom would
use everything from poison to dynamite in his desperate attempts to
exterminate Jerry; he would always come off worse, and yet suffer no
lasting damage.

During the 1940s and 1950s Barbera and Hanna made more than 100 Tom and
Jerry shorts, seven of which won Academy Awards. They remained so popular
that MGM could make almost as much from re-releasing the old cartoons as
it could from making new ones. When the studio recorded its first loss in
1957 it embarked on a thorough costcutting exercise and closed its
animation unit.

The two animators rose to new heights with their company Hanna-Barbera
Productions, which came to dominate the developing TV cartoons market.
Their creations included Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo and The Flintstones, a
prime-time show that featured an ordinary, working-class family, with whom
viewers could identify. With their cars, mod cons and bowling alleys, the
main characters were, as made clear in the theme song, written by Barbera
and Hanna, a modern, Stone Age family.

In turning out cartoons in such rapid succession Hanna-Barbera cut
corners, with characters running past the same background repeatedly. Some
critics felt the company was lowering the standards set by Disney.

The son of a barber, Joseph Roland Barbera was born in Manhattan in 1911
and grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn. After high school he spent six dreadful
years as a bank clerk, while drawing cartoons for magazines and studying
art in his spare time. He applied for a job with Disney, but did not get
an interview. After spells with other studios, including Terrytoons, he
joined MGM in 1937 and struck up a partnership with Hanna, who had been
with the studio for several years.
