Taking the "Paper" Out of the News

Our paper subscription to the Rocky Mountain News came up for renewal
during the recent blizzard. During this time, The Rocky graciously opened
their electronic edition to the public and we were able to try it out.

The shortcomings I have found in the past with reading the paper online
was the layout. I wanted the the ads and the layout chosen by the editors.
Both have a lot of meaning to me on what they consider important and what
is happening in the business world.

With the current electronic edition, I got all I wanted in the daily Rocky
Mountain News. It looks just like the printed paper and it's easy to press
print and print out a separate article or ad for reference later. The
pages actually turn similarly to how you'd turn the newspaper pages.

So, we renewed the Rocky at our home for another year. However, instead of
the paper version (cost $108) we decided to subsribe to the Electronic
Edition (Cost $30).

Agriculture Communications Documentation Center News

Wake-up call to journalists (and journalism educators) In Issue 01-17 we
mentioned a graduate thesis by Thomas F. Pawlick examining agricultural
reporting and agricultural journalism training in three global regions:
North America, the former Soviet Bloc and Africa. Pawlik's research led
him to conclude that current issues involving food and agriculture are
"not only newsworthy, but crucial to the future of the human species
itself." Also, ".both farm coverage and the resources available for
training farm journalists are inadequate - in some cases, grossly
inadequate." Well, that research report has come off the press as a new
book: Thomas F. Pawlick, The invisible farm: the worldwide decline of farm
news and agricultural journalism training. Burnham Inc., Publishers, 222
N. Canal Street, Chicago, Illinois 60606. 2001. 202 pages. $23.95 paper.

News' Compartmentalization: Implications For Food Biotechnology Coverage
Robert A. Logan
University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism

This essay explains that some of the news media's challenges and problems
in covering agrobiotechnology might be linked to structural organization
and traditions within the nation's newsrooms. Within serious news
organizations, food biotechnology news often has been perceived as an
agriculture food or business story, instead of a science, environment, or
investigative story. All these news emphases, or beats, have different
traditions and inclinations in news reporting, which may explain how food
biotechnology news has been covered by American journalists. This essay
notes the importance to increase interest in food biotechnology
coverageespecially among science writers within serious news
organizations.

Key words: journalism; food biotechnology news coverage; public
communication of food biotechnology; science journalism; agricultural
journalism.

The Invisible Farm: The Worldwide Decline of Farm News and Agricultural
Journalism Training
Thomas F. Pawlick
(202 pages, Burnham Inc., Publishers, 2001, $23.95, ISBN 0-8304-1582-3)
Reviewed by Stephen A. Banning
<http://www.aceweb.org/JAC/v88n3/883-r1.htm>

The premise of this book is that agricultural journalism has been coopted,
essentially tainted, by the major agricultural companies. At a time
when there is concern that agricultural communication programs are swaying
too much in favor of PR and too little in favor of traditional journalism
emphasis, it is a text that should be required reading in every
agricultural communications curriculum.

It may not be a premise with which you agree, but it will definitely
stimulate discussion and aid students in developing critical thinking
skills.

Considering the paucity of publications on agricultural communications (I
count one besides this), a teacher in the field would be hard put not to
make it a serious consideration. Other publications, such as Toxic Sludge
Is Good for You and A Grain of Truth: The Media, The Public and
Biotechnology have touched on similar challenges, but The Invisible Farm
is the first book to focus solely on the issue.

About Us
<http://www.contentbank.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=About_Us4>

Contentbank.org is a Web site that promotes the development of online
content for and by low-income and underserved communities. It is a project
of The Children's Partnership (TCP), a national, nonprofit child advocacy
organization. (If you are new to Contentbank.org, see Get Started.)

The site is firmly grounded in our extensive research, including a
year-long study that resulted in the publication of Online Content for
Low-Income and Underserved Americans: The Digital Divide's New Frontier.
This report found the following:

There are more that 50 million Internet users whose needs are not being
met by existing Internet content;

Low-income users are more likely than others to use the Internet for
self-improvement, by looking for employment and educational information;

and

Low-income and other underserved users wanted very local content,
available in a variety of languages, and at levels accessible to users
with limited literacy skills, or for whom English is their second
language.

However, our research showed that little online content like this exists.
In response, we launched Contentbank.org in June of 2002 as part of our
national initiative to guarantee that high-quality content is available to
underserved children and families.

Greetings Net Gold Members,

This post left me with many unanswered questions.....

The defense's expert witness was right - but apparently not
confincing to the jury.

Years ago, something similar happened to me at home when I checked a
site that USED to be an art site. I always checked the sites at home
first. I simply turned off my machine. This was years before pop-up
blocker and anti-spyware software....and before schools had
filtering systems.

This case also caught the eye of Nancy Willard. She encourages folks
to write letters to the officials (In a post to Ed Tech list).

Nancy also found the article in Norwich Bulletin.
>From Nancy's Ed Tech Post:

Here is another link to the story:

http://www.norwichbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?
AID=/20070106/NEWS01/701060312/1002/NEWS17

In my opinion, this district failed to implement the basic security
protections.

* Spyware blocking

* Pop-up ad prevention

* Filtering

* A system in place to report technical concerns and prompt
responsiveness to those reports

* And since none of the technology protections can be trusted to be
entirely safe, every staff member and student should be taught that
the action to take if inappropriate material appears is to turn off
the screen and report the problem to the technical department so
that the department can investigate and resolve the problem.

I have written an email to the following school officials:

<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (chair of board),
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
(superintendent), <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (information
technology director who should be fired),
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>(principal),
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (asst principal to whom
a report of the problem was made).

As well as a local reporter: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

And here is the email address for the division of criminal justice:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

An innocent teacher who is the victim of inadequate Internet use
management has been convicted and faces up to 40 years in prison. I
hope you will take the time to communicate to these individuals.

--------------------------------------------

I will let you know if I hear more on this case.

The U.S. Troops' 'Unconventional' Presence
by Herbert Docena

NEXT month commences a new round of joint U.S.-Philippine military
exercises. Cancelled by the United States in protest over the
continued detention at the Makati city jail of a U.S. Marine convicted
of raping a Filipina, the Balikatan exercises were given a go-signal
again soon after the Philippine government allowed U.S. Embassy
authorities to take temporary custody of Lance Corporal Daniel Smith.

Many assume that the annual joint military exercises are the only
times U.S. troops are present in the Philippines. What is not
generally known, however, is that U.S. forces have had a constant
presence in the country since January 2002, and that there was
contingent clearly staying on in the south whether or not there were
Balikatan exercises.

In a special i Report feature, Herbert Docena, who is with the policy
research institute Focus on the Global South, notes that the U.S.
Special Operations Forces (SOFs) that have maintained a contingent
here are not exactly "ordinary" troops. "According to the SOF's own
definition," he writes, "'special operations' are those `conducted in
hostile, denied, or politically sensitive environments' and that
require `covert, clandestine, or discreet capabilities.' The U.S. Army
Field Manual — a guide for military missions and procedures —
meanwhile says that SOFs are the `force of choice' for `dynamic,
ambiguous, and politically volatile situations.'"

In 2002, a petition was filed before the Supreme Court seeking to
thwart the deployment of U.S. troops to the Philippines, arguing that
these were "going to war" here. The Court, however, said that while
foreign troops are constitutionally banned from engaging in an
"offensive war" in the country, it was still a "question of fact" that
U.S. military personnel were in fact going to do such.

Docena, however, presents new and accumulated information that
indicates a need to revisit the "question of fact" the Supreme Court
said had to proven first five years ago.
