Route 15 Bus Substitution AND Worldcat
WEBBIB0607
After sharing some news with two trolley discussion groups about
developments on the Route 15 trolley, I thought it would be of interest to
share with them about trolley related titles of books and other
monographs to be found using Worldcat in the free version on the web that
unfortunately has a glitch of showing number of results but no records at
this time today. This post is below my signature lines. Note in the
sample of records shown there are some childrens books about trolleys.
By the way, the term for using busses on trolley lines is bustitution.
Bustitution
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quoting
The term "bustitution" is a neologism sometimes used to describe the
practice of replacing train service, whether street railways (light rail
or tram/streetcar systems) or full-size railway systems, with a bus
service, either on a temporary or permanent basis. The word is a play on
the word "substitution".
It has sometimes been used to describe the dismantling of the street
railway systems of many cities in North America in the mid-20th century.
The term is usually used in a somewhat derogatory sense and, when used, it
usually means that a full conversion (rather than just a reduction) has
taken place. Those who use this term tend to oppose the conversion and
believe in the General Motors Streetcar Conspiracy that powerful
corporations with an interest in the ascendancy of the bus and automobile
were largely responsible, rather than the change being made for economic
reasons. Others believe that regardless of any conspiracy, the change

Subject: Route 15 Bus Substitution AND Worldcat
After leaving Temple University Yesterday, I rode on Girard and Richmond
Avenues and had occassion to see around five or six substition busses on
Route 15. While in August of 2005, busses on this route bore destination
signs for the route and its terminus at either end, all of these busses
had signs for Rail Shuttle, except for one that bore the sign SEPTA Rodeo.
This does point up one shortfall of trolleys. When SEPTA participates in
these rodeos, trolleys cannot be participants in these events. <g>
The destination signs not having route 15 signs may be a clue that SEPTA
no longer expects to be running busses on the 15 line, a sign of perhaps
stronger commitment to keeping this line trolley or perhaps I am grasping
at straws.
On another topic, trolley lists have not heard about OCLC FirstSearch
making Worldcat a free open to everyone on the internet database. This
may seem to have no bearing on Philadelphia trolleys, but on the contrary,
anyone who likes books about traction, trains and the like will be
benefited by this database of way over 1000 participating libraries from
around the world and particularly the United States and Canada and
selected listings internationally of libraries owning these books can be
also determined through the use of this database.
WorldCat is the world's largest network
of library content and services
<http://www.worldcat.org/>
Over 1 billion items in more than 10,000 libraries worldwide
Furthermore OCLC, owner of Worldcat acquired the Research Library Group of
which Temple University Libraries is a member. Hence any libraries not
contributing holdings to Worldcat before that are RLG members will now or
in the future have their holdings in Worldcat.
Consider this search in Worldcat.
Search trolley
Results 1-10 of about 4,811
Search trolleys
Results 1-10 of about 614
Search streetcars
Results 1-10 of about 658
Since there is a glitch in this system this morning such that it is not
showing actual records, I will combine these searches in the fee based
commercial FirstSearch version of Worldcat to show the kinds of records
found here.
This is the search in the advanced fee based system
(trolley or trolleys or (street w1 car) or (street w1 cars) or streetcar
or streetcars or traction) and (rail or transportation or track or tracks
or city or cities)
There are citations to books that are off topic as these words have
meanings other than urban rail transportation, even with some words
combined to tease this search in the direction of trolleys as we think of
them rather than shopping carts and the like.
The search found over 4000 records and here are a few of the interesting
ones.
