'Storm Worm' Rages Across the Globe

"Storm Worm," one of the larger Trojan horse attacks in recent years, is
baiting people with timely information about a deadly, real-life storm
front, security researchers said Friday.
<snip>
People who open the attachment then unknowingly become part of a botnet. A
botnet serves as an army of commandeered computers, which are later used
by attackers without their owners' knowledge.
Storm Worm carries the subject line "230 dead as storm batters Europe,"
Hypponen said, noting the unusual twist to the e-mail.
"The e-mail was started 15 hours ago, when the storm was peaking in
Central Europe," Hypponen said. "This is unusual in that it was very
timely."
Storm Worm is a Trojan horse with an executable file as an attachment.
Cybercriminals took advantage of social engineering, using the news of the
European storm to get people to open the attached malicious file, which
promises more news on the weather emergency. The recipient must open the
file for it to execute.
The file creates a back door to a computer that can be exploited later to
steal data or to use the computer to post spam.
<snip>
Other e-mail subject lines for it include "U.S. Secretary of State
Condoleezza..." and "A killer at 11, he's free at 21 and..."

Witness to the Decline of Books
A Librarian Sees Readers Check Out
Jan. 20, 2007, 8:31PM
By Thomas Washington
Houston Chronicle
<http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/editorial/outlook/4484927.html>
When I started in this profession five years ago I used to teach English
I presumed that librarians were mostly united in their attraction to
books. But as I moved along in my library science program, I found that
books weren't really our focus. Information management, database
networking and research tools claimed the largest share of the curriculum.
In other words, literacy today is defined less by how English departments
or a librarian might teach Wordsworth or Faulkner than by how we find our
way through the digital forest of information overload.
Typically, many people in my line of work no longer have the title of
librarian. They are called media and information specialists, or sometimes
librarian technologists.
The buzzword in the trade is "information literacy," a misnomer, because
what it is really about is mastering computer skills, not promoting a love
of reading and books. These days, librarians measure the quality of
returns in data-mining stints. We teach students how to maximize a
database search, about successful retrieval rates. What usually gets lost
in the scramble is a careful reading of the material.
<snip>
Conventional wisdom has it that teenagers don't read because they're too
busy. Only after high school, sometime midway through college, do young
adults reconnect with their childhood love of reading and make books their
partners for life. I don't think so anymore. The 2004 Reading at Risk
report by the National Endowment for the Arts concluded that literary
reading was in serious decline on all fronts, especially among the
youngest adults, ages 18 to 24, whose rate of decrease was 55 percent
greater than that of the total adult population.

One important thought here is that quite a few people instead of borrowing
books from libraries would rather buy their own books through places like
discount book outlets, garage sales, EBAY, Froogle, college text and book
outlets online, or read books online in Google Books, the Guttenberg
Project, Net Libraries, and more online sources like these, or catch sale
shelves at Barnes and Noble or Borders and other book stores. There are
even those people who will pay manufacturer's suggested retail price for
new books. In libraries, the books one wants are often out in
circulation, particularly best sellers, and some people are simply
frustrated with public libraries for their reading needs. This is in no
way a criticism of public libraries. Some people have very specific
reading needs and public libraries may not be equipped to deal with what
these people want to read in any quantity to keep these folks reading
these sources for any length of time. Patience is in short supply in our
society, so if 300 people want to read the latest best seller when it
comes out, the library is not going to be able to have on hand 300 or 150
or 75 copies of that book and readers wanting to see it the day after it
comes out will need to find other sources for these hot books. In short,
library circulation figures and book retention periods of library books
are not the only measures of whether people still read complete books.

David Dillard

State College Grew Despite Status as Inaccessible

The joke is as old as the Farmers High School and may even predate the
institution chartered in 1855.
An outsider asks directions of a local man who, happy to oblige, answers
confidently at first, but has to stop and restart several times.
Finally, in frustration, he sputters, "You can't get there from here."
That was almost literally true of the hamlet that grew up around the
agricultural school that became Pennsylvania State College. It was, as
Penn State President Edwin Sparks famously described, "equally
inaccessible from all parts of the state."
Or, as Vivian Doty Hench wrote in "The History of State College,
1896-1946," the borough "continued for many years after its founding to be
'off the main line' of public transportation."
Public transportation, in the early days, meant the Bellefonte Central
Railroad, "which had replaced the horse-drawn bus," Hench wrote. And to
meet the growing demand, "it had often been necessary to add a half dozen
extra coaches for special occasions at the College."
But people still had to get from the train station to the campus. That's
where Percival Rudy came in.
Percival "Perc" Rudy, "Penn State's original hackman," according to Hench,
"was the man at the reins of the old 'Mountain Echo' for more than 35
years." He later went into business for himself, "thereby claiming the
honor of operating one of the first 'taxis' in the village."
"Many recollect this large open car, which hauled passengers from the
station at Lemont at 'twenty-five cents a head,' " Hench continued.
<snip>
But the stage, like the train, was eventually replaced by the motor bus,
which, as Hench explained, "afforded isolated State College with better
outside connections."
Those connections led initially to Tyrone in one direction and to Lock
Haven and eventually to Williamsport in another.
But when the new highway, Route 322, came to the Centre Region, so did
Greyhound -- to what was initially a mixed greeting.

Subject: Research Guide: A Tool for Building Subject Guides
David, thought would bring this to your notice...
Soundar
ResearchGuide: a tool for building subject guides
THIS WEEK, NetSpeak explores a tool that can be used for developing
subject guides by subject experts/librarians through a web interface.
Though search engines such as Google and AllTheWeb.com are the major tools
employed by most netizens for locating Net resources, these have some
obvious drawbacks. For example, a researcher looking for information
sources related to a subject, however good he is with search engines, may
not be able to collect all the relevant links with a single query. The
lack of a proper mechanism to evaluate the quality of the search output is
another deficiency. These limitations of search engines have led to the
creation of alternative search tools and `subject guides' is one such
alternative.
Subject guide
A subject guide can be regarded as a web portal that guides the user to
appropriate web locations by subjects. That is, if you access a subject
guide on a specific subject, say political science (for example,
<http://www.library.ubc.ca/poli/>
[The Political Science Net Station website is no longer being maintained.
You can still access the site from
The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine
<http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.library.ubc.ca/poli/welcome.html>
by searching for the URL
http://www.library.ubc.ca/poli/welcome.html
at
<http://www.archive.org>
For further information on Political Science resources available at the
UBC Library, visit the UBC Library Political Science subject page.]
you will find many access points that will take you directly to web pages
related to this subject and there is little chance of the presence of dead
or irrelevant links. The significance of a subject guide is that, as
specialists create it, its contents will be more authentic/reliable as
compared to search engine results. On the Net you will find several search
guides that include `WWW Resources in economics'
<http://www.helsinki.fi/WebEc/>
and `Subject guide: Physics'
<http://library.queensu.ca/webeng/guides/physics/physics_subj.htm>
Here, we will examine a free tool, `ResearchGuide,' that can be used by a
research organisation or library to develop a search guide easily.
ResearchGuide
<http://researchguide.sourceforge.net/>
is a PHP-based open-source tool for helping subject specialists create
subject guides on various subjects by entering the content "through web
forms.'' That is, once the tool is in place and set up properly, an
authorised subject specialist can populate the database with information
available on the Net related to a specific subject, and this can be
accessed by any one on the Net via the Web.
As mentioned in its site, the subject expert can create different
categories from Reference Works/Indexes to Articles/Collections and can
add any number of resources to these categories. Apart from the facility
to create a subject guide through the web, the tool lets one create a
`specialist' page where one can present one's personal/professional
details. To experiment with this tool, access its demo page at:
<http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://researchguide.
sourceforge.net/guide/admin/>
A shorter URL for the above link:
<http://tinyurl.com/yw93pa>
You can use the tools available here to create your own subject guide on a
subject of your choice.
To implement this service, you just need to have access to a Web server
with MySQL (free database server) and PHP support. If you are a Windows
user you can download the package PHPTriad which can automatically install
Apache web server, MySQL server and PHP in your desktop, from the site:
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/phptriad/>
If the required set up is ready, download the ResourceGuide archive and
expand it to web server's document directory. For more details on the
installation, refer the link:
<http://researchguide.sourceforge.net/guide/docs/index.txt>
Another point to note is that `ResearchGuide' archive comes bundled with
another useful tool,
phpMyAdmin
<http://www.phpmyadmin.net/>
that can be used to administer MySQL databases through the Web.

16 June 2004. Revised 2 May 2005. The U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security
(BIS) maintains this list of foreign individuals and companies, which
"have been determined to present an unacceptable risk of diversion to
developing weapons of mass destruction or the missiles used to deliver
those weapons." Changes to the list appear officially in the Federal
Register.
The Excluded Parties List System provides integrated search access to
several debarment lists.
Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator
27 November 2001. Revised 8 April 2005. The Federal Bureau of Prisons
offers a database of information about federal inmates currently
incarcerated or released since 1982. Select Inmate Locator from the main
navigational menu. Search by name (first and last required) or one of four
different identification numbers, to find name, registration number, age,
race, sex, released or projected release date, and location. Note that the
name search is an exact match (e.g., "jon" will not find "jonathan"). You
may click through on the location to obtain the prison's visiting
regulations.
Sincerely,
David Dillard
