[Philly_Traction] PCC II's Back in Service
In a post in which I also talked about Worldcat on the web and the books
about traction held in their files, I also started the post with
information about the historic trolleys having cracked tortion bar
problems and all of them being taken out of service. I commented on the
replacement buses and also about the pertinent terminology used in the
replacement of trolleys with buses, the word being bustitution.
To state that on the Philly_Traction list this topic was discussed some
since the bustitution happened would be like saying one occassionally
finds a bit of moisture in rain forrests or that libraries from time to
time may indulge themselves by purchasing a couple of books.
There was deep concern that Brookeville, the re-manufacturer of these
vintage trolleys would not stand behind the guarantee for this equipment,
that the trolleys would be out of service for a long time and so forth.
We were also treated to a thorough and complex discussion of the tortion
bar's role in the trolley's anatomy. Ed Haven's as always kept the list
up to date with the SEPTA daily news from Tuscon, Arizona and had to quick
change gears last Friday as the news of that day bore no news of the
trolleys pending return on Monday (today) that another poster had
described. It seems in that post about the return of trolleys to Route 15
all the trolleys had returned from the Elmwood heavy maintenance facility
and were now back home at the Callowhill depot resting up for their big
day on Monday.

But the wait was until Monday and in the meantime I posted to
Philly_Traction and Net-Gold as to what I saw in regard to the buses
substituting on route 15.

SEPTA spells a word -
Philadelphia's Route 15 trolley returns!
October 2005
The Trolleyville Times
<http://www.trolleyville.com/tv/times/oct2005/headline09.html>
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) managed to
spell a word over twenty years ago when they designed and obtained the
Kawasaki Light Rail Vehicles back in 1981 that are still used on the five
Subway-surface lines in West Philadelphia. Their luck came up again.
Despite their best shots to kill the project, they managed to spell
another one. Trolleys returned to Route 15 after an absence of 13 years.
Ron Carson of Carson Home Video was on hand early Sunday, September 4th
when the first cars rolled out of Callowhill Car House and provided these
photos.
Just after midnight on September 4th, PCC-II 2323, shown above at 63rd and
Girard, made the first run. So after a year of mindless inactivity,
wrangling and outright inept management by the transit authority, local
politicians and some vocal but ignorant local residents, PCC-II streetcars
began polishing the rails of the Girard Avenue line for the first time
since PCC cars ceased operation on the line in September 1992. Later in
the day Car 2332 loads at Richmond & Allegheny.
[We in Philadelphia all know that it is actually Richmond and
Westmoreland, one block North of Allegheny next to a Wawa.]

post is below my signature lines. Our star took off from work today so he
could welcome the route 15 trolleys back into service and he brought his
camera. Now Bob Vogel is no hobbyist in photography, his work is
excellent.

Subject: [Philly_Traction] PCC II's back in service
Having read on this board that the PCC II's were scheduled to return
to service Monday morning, when the inclement weather encouraged me
to take a personal day from work, I went over to Girard Ave to check
out the situation.
Of course I took PATCO from Collingswood.
http://chuchubob.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=631754
I got off at 8th & Market intending to take the MFSE to Girard, but
just missed one, so I went to 15th Street
http://chuchubob.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=631756
and took the BSS to Girard Ave.
http://chuchubob.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=631758
As soon as I reached the surface, an eastbound PCC II came along. I
chose to photograph it rather than ride it
http://chuchubob.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=631759
until the light went red for Girard Ave, giving me the opportunity to
get on. I switched to a westbound at 11th Street.
http://chuchubob.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=631760
interior of 2327
http://chuchubob.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=631761
I got off at Lancaster Ave, where an eastbound was just departing.
http://chuchubob.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=631763
Another passenger was so slow disembarking that I had exited via the
back door and photographed the eastbound, and still had time to
photograph the slowpoke exiting from the front door.
http://chuchubob.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=631764
Of course I took advantage of the opportunity to photograph the Route
10 Kawasakis, one in each direction, before the next eastbound Route
15 came along.

DOJ Report Faults FBI In Handling of Foley Congressional Page E-Mail
A REVIEW OF THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION'S INITIAL RESPONSE TO
REPRESENTATIVE MARK FOLEY'S E-MAILS TO A FORMER PAGE
January 22, 2007
The Department of Justice Inspector General issued a report criticizing
the FBI's handling of a congressional watchdog group's contacting the
agency out of concern that e-mails received by a former page for Rep. Mark
Foley warranted further investigation for possible criminal conduct. The
FBI concluded that no further investigation was warranted.
The Inspector General concluded, however, "that the e-mails provided
enough troubling indications on their face, particularly given the
position of trust and authority that Foley had with respect to House
pages, that a better practice for the FBI would have been to take at least
some follow-up steps..."

Commercial Color Trends for 2007
Published in Buildings
Seasoned color professionals predict future color styles to create the
right impression
Complete Article
<http://www.buildings.com/Articles/detailBuildings.asp?ArticleID=3474>
Paint color is an inexpensive and easy way to make a statement in the
interior of any building. A new coat of the appropriate color can finish
the look of a newly constructed building or bring new life to an older
structure. The colors you choose for your facility speak volumes to your
tenants and customers. What are the colors in your building saying now? If
you don't know, or are afraid of the answer, 2007 might be the perfect
time to give your building's interior an updated look.
The Alexandria, VA-based Color Marketing Group can help you choose the
right colors for your facility, depending on its function, size, and
tenant base. The international association of color design professionals
gathered in Atlanta recently to pool their expertise, review societal and
economic forces currently impacting the marketplace, and predict key color
trends for commercial properties in 2007. Savvy building owners know that
color is a good way to create the right impression. Here, these seasoned
color professionals predict future color styles ...
Buildings will Look and Feel More Like Home. There will be a strong trend
toward the use of colors that provide a sense of comfort and a home-like
atmosphere in commercial spaces. Retail spaces, public spaces, and
commercial interiors will increasingly reflect the comforting colors that
make our homes feel like a refuge from the pressures of the outside world.
The most compelling building interiors will be painted and covered in
colors that feel truly warm, but never hot.

The BBC is in advanced negotiations with Google to make programming
available via a branded channel on the search giant's video-sharing site,
MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.
It is understood that BBC executives are keen that the deal, which
involves BBC Worldwide and the BBC, is eventually expanded to include
putting content on Google-owned YouTube.
BBC Worldwide is understood to be looking at commercial options for the
agreement, such as a share on contextual advertising that will run
alongside BBC content.
This would mirror the type of deal that YouTube has in place with US
sports organisation NHL.
The BBC will use Google Video as a vehicle to raise the profile of its
content by posting clips of popular programming.
The two companies are expected to announce the agreement to coincide with
a trip by the Google chief executive, Eric Schmidt, to the World Economic
Forum in Davos on Wednesday.
Last July, Google rolled out eight country-specific versions of Google
Video in Europe and signed up content partners including ITN, IMG Media
(the sports company that handles events such as Wimbledon), A&E (which
owns the History Channel) and Buena Visa International Europe.

PUBMED is the source from the National Library of Medicine of the MEDLINE

discussion group.
