Tips to Help Prevent Laptop Theft
Absolute Softwares top ten laptop security recommendations
<http://www.absolute.com/Public/main/laptop-security-tips.asp>

Content Sample:

Use visual deterrents. A cable lock or other locking mechanism can act as
a deterrent to would-be criminals. Although they can be ripped off the
plastic exterior of a laptop with a strong tug, they do force some
criminals to think twice before taking the risk.

Avoid leaving unsecured laptops unattended. Lock them in cupboards, laptop
carts or other secure facilities when not in use. If they must be left in
a vehicle, they should be covered up or locked in the trunk.

Keep laptops inconspicuous. Laptops should always be carried in
inconspicuous carrying cases, such as backpacks or tote bags, instead of
tell-tale laptop bags.

Use complex passwords and change them regularly. Dont use simple passwords
that can be guessed easily. Always use a combination of numbers and
letters and never leave your password in obvious places on or near the
computer. As well, also password-protect your screensaver to avoid
unwanted access to your computer if youve stepped away.

The International Music Score Library Project! IMSLP attempts to create a
virtual library containing all public domain musical scores, as well as
scores from composers who are willing to share their music with the world
without charge. You can read the full list of goals that IMSLP will try to
achieve.

IMSLP also encourages the exchange of musical ideas, both in the form of
musical works, and in the analysis of existing ones.

How Wikis Work

For some people, this might be the first wiki that you visit. Wikis are,
in fact, very easy to use. Probably the most basic thing you will want to
know about the IMSLP wiki is that most pages can be edited by anyone. You
can go to this test page and try editing it with the "Edit this page"
button at the top of the page.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA):
EPA Won't Close More Libraries Without Consultation

EPA Gets an Earful on Library Closures
Decision Derided as Harmful to Agency's Own Employees
By Robert McClure
Seattle Post-Intelligencer

A national controversy over cutbacks and outright closings of
Environmental Protection Agency libraries came to Seattle over the weekend
as librarians from around the country told EPA officials the agency is
undercutting its own workers, its scientists and the public.

Across vast stretches of the heartland, EPA scientists, university
researchers and others have scrambled to locate documents once easily
found by librarians in the agency's regional headquarters, said
participants in the America Library Association annual conference.

It's a development that critics fear could befall the Seattle EPA library,
where hours of operation already have been reduced.

With a congressional investigation pending, agency officials responded
that they are merely trying to move the EPA libraries' contents onto the
Internet, where people worldwide can use them more readily.

But critics, including current and former EPA workers, say that's not how
it's working out. Nearly all the documents not actually written by the EPA
would not be put online, EPA officials told them, because of copyright
restrictions.

"Academic scientists are very unhappy with this," said Michelle McKnelly,
a librarian at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Complaints at the library association's Saturday session at the Washington
State Convention and Trade Center came mostly from librarians who work in
a 15-state swath of the country stretching from Ohio and Minnesota to New
Mexico and Louisiana. The three EPA regional libraries serving those
states were shut down.

EPA Won't Close More Libraries Without Consultation
January 22, 2007
Library Journal
<http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6408970.html>

The Environmental Protection Agency's decision to close five of 26 agency
libraries has prompted steady criticism from the American Library
Association (ALA) and others, and that criticism has paid off: the agency
won't close more libraries without further consultation. "We have
re-engaged," a conciliatory, contrite Mike Flynn, of the EPA's Office of
Environmental Information, said Saturday at an update session sponsored by
the ALA Washington Office at the Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. He said the
EPA had been ineffective in communicating its plans to rely more on
electronic documents. "As we move forward, EPA is in the process of
analyzing and seeking stakeholder input. We're planning on taking the
current plan and revising it," he said. "We're not on a road to close all
our physical libraries. We're looking for the right mix."

After the publication of ALA President Leslie Burger's December 8 op-ed
about the issue in the New York Times, the EPA requested a meeting with
ALA's Washington Office, and agreed they wouldn't close more libraries
without further public outreach. ALA and EPA staff met several times, and
on January 4, the EPA agreed to send several representatives to the
Midwinter Meeting. Flynn met with a welcoming but skeptical response from
several librarians, some of whom reported difficulty in getting EPA
documents via interlibrary loan or who said that scientists they work with
have been frustrated by the closures of physical libraries

Justice in Jakarta
By Charmain Mohamed
Published in The Wall Street Journal Asia
Despite all its recent progress, Indonesia remains far from a fully

George W. Bush visits Indonesia today, human rights needs to be high on
his agenda.

Building Towers, Cheating Workers
Exploitation of Migrant Construction Workers in the United Arab Emirates
Based on extensive interviews with workers, government officials and
business representatives, this 71-page report documents serious abuses of
construction workers by employers in the United Arab Emirates. These
abuses include unpaid or extremely low wages, several years of
indebtedness to recruitment agencies for fees that UAE law says only
employers should pay, the withholding of employees passports, and
hazardous working conditions that result in apparently high rates of death
and injury.

Race to the Bottom
Corporate Complicity in Chinese Internet Censorship
Chinas system of Internet censorship and surveillance, popularly known as
the Great Firewall, is the most advanced in the world. In this 149-page
report, Human Rights Watch documents how extensive corporate and private
sector cooperation including by some of the worlds major Internet
companies enables this system of censorship. Research was performed
through interviews and extensive testing of search engines in China, and
includes 18 screen shots to illustrate examples of censorship. The report
vividly illustrates how various companies, including Yahoo!, Microsoft,
Google, and Skype block terms they believe the Chinese government will
want them to censor.

STATE OF OUR UNION

Tonight President Bush will offer 'his' version of the state of 'OUR'
union. In my opinion he is COMPLETELY insane.Normally the STATE of THE
UNION message is little more than FANFARE.Normally every rhetorical
statement is recognized with fervent applause. That's PROTOCOL.Tonight I
hope that President Bush is recognized for what he has led OUR country
into...insanity and that PROTOCOL will be abandoned. In any event it
should be an interesting watch,
..
GOOD LUCK

At a forum hosted by the state Department of Education at the Mohegan Fire
House Tuesday, other parents of special-needs students communicated their
concerns and disappointments with the approach taken by administrators and
staff when disciplining their children.

Brennan said administrators disciplined her son, who is both autistic and
bipolar, without taking in consideration his needs and that he struggles
to stay seated and remain in the classroom for extended periods of time
without being allowed to move frequently and take breaks.

Brennan's son was told he could not leave the room during his inside
suspension. Brennan said that after sitting still for hours, he became
frustrated and told the monitor that he was leaving. Administrators found
him outside the school, patiently sitting on a bench, Brennan said.

<snip>

The forum was for parents of special education students to address the
large percentage of suspensions and expulsions.

I don't know why we're suspending special-needs students. It's not like
it's a vacation for them, parent Colleen Reid said. It only hurts them.

They stressed the importance of positive reinforcement and the need for
educators to re-direct students after they've been suspended. Most of the
parents said their child had been suspended a number of times.

They just can't see the good in these kids, Brennan said. (Students are)
supposed to change with no help?

<snip>

Parents agreed that there is a push from administrators for special-needs
students to transfer to the Montville Alternative High School, where
students who are considered to be high risk are placed in a flexible
environment to focus on academics while working on behavior.

Legal Nurse Consulting: The Next Big Trend

Legal Nurse Consulting: The Next Big Trend
By Neal R. Bevans

Legal Assistant Today

Thirty years ago, the archly conservative world of lawyers began to see a
quiet revolution. The staff members who had always worked for lawyers, and
without whom lawyers could not function, began to organize themselves into
separate groups. One such group was paralegals or legal assistants. This
group was composed of individuals who worked hand-in-glove with attorneys,
researching the law, interacting with clients and doing much of the legal
grunt work. They began to organize, network and demand higher pay for a
job that called for intensive training, discipline, long hours and
dedication. That same process is beginning again, but with a different
group of individuals. This group is legal nurse consultants, and they will
be the next big trend to hit the legal field.

I think that legal nurse consultants are getting more popular because
attorneys are starting to appreciate the benefits of using someone with a
medical background, said Mary Ann Shea, president of the American
Association of Legal Nurse Consultants. In the past, they would have used
doctors. Legal nurse consultants are a lot more cost effective.

What is a Legal Nurse Consultant?

A legal nurse consultant is usually a registered nurse who acts as a legal
consultant on medical issues in lawsuits. They work with law firms on a
case-by-case basis to review medical records and patient treatment. Some
also work in-house as salaried employees for law firms. They are brought
in on a wide variety of cases, from personal injury to product liability
research.

<snip>

With their medical background, LNCs can educate attorneys about standards
of medical treatment, explain medical procedures and provide assistance
with discovery requests, deposition questions and selection of expert
witnesses.

In addition to the above excerpt of this article, these matters are
covered in this article.

A Growing Industry

Like legal assistants, LNCs have already formed their own organization.

Branching Out

The word is out: There is a big group of highly trained medical
professionals who want to share their training and experience with
lawyers. And lawyers are paying attention.

How LNCs Can Assist a Law Firm

1. Organizing the Medical File
2. Searching the Records and Assisting with Discovery
3. Interpreting Notes
4. Preparing for Depositions
5. Locating Expert Witnesses
