THE RASPBERRY PI FOUNDATION has released Raspbian, a fork of the Debian
Linux distribution.

Earlier this week the Raspberry Pi Foundation announced that its
resellers were lifting order order limits as the computer's producers
were able to churn out 4,000 devices a day. Now the outfit has released
Raspbian, a fork of Debian that is optimised to make the most of the
Raspberry Pi hardware.

According to Raspberry Pi project leader Eben Upton, the ARM v6 memcpy()
and memset() functions have been optimised in Raspbian Linux and he
suggested that people running Debian Squeeze or Wheezy releases will see
performance improvements by using Raspbian.

Upton also pointed to benchmarks pitting Debian's use of the armel
architecture against Raspbian's armhf architecture. In a number of
benchmarks, Raspbian showed impressive improvements over Debian, adding
weight to Upton's recommendation that Raspberry Pi owners running
vanilla Debian should make the switch.

The Raspberry Pi people have packaged Raspbian Linux into an SD card
image download file, which includes the LXDE window manager, Midori web
browser and a clutch of development tools.
