New Jersey Franchising Bill Signed Into Law National Journal
Monday, August 7, 2006 http://www.njtelecomupdate.com/lenya/telco/live/tb-LPDO1119389349629.html New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has signed into a law a measure to streamline his state's telecommunications rules. Under the law, video service providers entering new markets will now be allowed to bypass local governments and obtain statewide franchises. They previously had to reach separate agreements with localities. Similar laws have been enacted during the past year in Indiana, Kansas, South Carolina and Texas. In a statement, Corzine said the new law will benefit consumers by boosting competition in the Garden State. "The power of competition can improve quality and lower prices," Corzine declared. He also signed an executive order directing the Board of Public Utilities to ensure that service providers deploy their networks in low-income and rural areas. "Taken together, the bill and the executive order will help ensure that all of New Jersey's communities receive the benefits of meaningful cable television competition as quickly as possible," Corzine said. ================================ George Antunes, Political Science Dept University of Houston; Houston, TX 77204 Voice: 713-743-3923 Fax: 713-743-3927 antunes at uh dot edu Reply with a "Thank you" if you liked this post. _____________________________ MEDIANEWS mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
