EVMS honors graduate who died on space shuttle The Virginian-Pilot NORFOLK - Eastern Virginia Medical School officials unveiled a memorial Saturday to David Brown, one of the seven astronauts killed in the space shuttle Columbia and a 1982 graduate of EVMS. Brown's parents and brother attended the ceremony, which also mentioned the school's work toward a scholarship in honor of Brown. Anyone interested in donating to the scholarship can call EVMS at (757) 446-6070. Brown beca me a Navy pilot and captain, and later a mission specialist on Columbia. He returned often to the medical school for reunions and once delivered a commencement speech. The memorial to Brown stands in Lewis Hall. A display case holds items donated by his family, including a blue NASA jumpsuit, school notes and a book of letters and drawings from children across the country who wrote to the Brown family after the Columbia disaster in 2003.
