I have not actually tried this but I've read that this can be done by adding 
the extension:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CategoryTree
and then you can transclude one or more category pages into another page using 
the syntax:
{{#categorytree:Foo}}
Where Foo is a category page.  

So, for example you could combine categories A and B by specifying:

{{#categorytree:A}}
{{#categorytree:B}}

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Multi-Category_Search.
