There is this extension, which seems to be designed to do what you're asking for:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CalcII However, it is quite old and probably in need of updating. Nonetheless, you can give it a try to see if it works for you. Also, if you're inclined to do so, you could get involved in updating and maintaining the extension. I agree, it would be a very nice thing to have for MediaWiki.
