As a guess, $wgServer in LocalSettings.php should be set to a IP, not to localhost. But ...
- I'd start checking the output of the Java Script console of your browser for potential errors. - Without a detailed error message from the server's error log (and not just a 500 INTERNAL SERVER ERROR), there's no way we can figure out where's the problem and how to fix it. See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:How_to_debug for details about looking at the server's error log and enable debugging.
