The only thing I am aware of you can do is to apply a theme. I am attaching one I created that is predominantly gradients of blue but is much better than the white on white and doesn't mess up any of the other Windows views. It needs to reside in the My Documents folder for a user and then it becomes available like any other windows theme. Another fast option (if you have XP) is to use the Windows Classic view which gives you gray 3-D effects.
