Unfortunately Jeff, you do need to use the Alt NDC. Of course the scanners
can be programmed but there is other uses for that you'll find along the way
(like dropping a leading character in the printed barcode of the "lab label"
to prevent nursing from using that during the med pass process). Think of
this: the "package barcode" is the one that will be scanned by nursing so it
must match character for character in your Drug Dictionary. You're going to
have to scan your entire department (and then some) to ensure that all of
those of loaded on the correct drug. I haven't found a workaround yet, and
I will also add that many sites have in correct or bogus numbers in their
Alt NDC fields...I suppose by not paying attention while attaching the
scanned code.

Best of luck - Kevin.

Subject: NDC #'s for BMV

We are in the very initial stages of BMV implementation. When testing
the scanner on some bar codes from prepackaged unit dose drugs, I found
that they all lack the initial zero in the official 11 digit format.
Additionally, some of the bar codes I scanned have a prefix. Obviously,
none of them matched up with the correct 11 digit NDC number in my drug
dictionary which needs to kept perfect in order for fomulary service to
work. Is there any way to program a scanner to be compatible with the
standard NDC number format? Please don't tell me that I must use the Add
Alt. NDC# routine to add these bogus NDC's for every single drug in the
dictionary. Thanks.
