Hi - I have a rather similar plan. We have Medispan and I do have a CD
containing most of the Medispan drugs (about 100,000 I think), their NDC's and
their
GPI numbers. The GPI number is Medispan's number created such that all
Penicillin 500 mg tabs all have the same GPI number even though there may be 50
different NDC numbers. FDB has a similar proprietary number but I can't
remember what it is called. If I have a GPI number of a drug - say penicillin
500 mg
tabs,
I can then list out all (or most of the NDC numbers that go with that GPI
Number) The problem then come with the drugs that have placeholder 0's - we
don't
know where they go. If you go to the FDA site you can get an idea of what MFG's
have what sort of NDC numbers. I have scripted the GPI number into all but
about
500 of our 4000 drug entries in Meditech, so that for almost any drug mnemonic
I would have a GPI number and be able to list out all the NDC numbers.
I can put these into an Excel file and script them in for BMV if I want to.
I was hoping that there would be a way to just enter the GPI number into the
field for the BAR code and have that GPI number mapped somehow to the NDC so
when the barcode was swiped it would send the NDC number to find the GPI number
and "penicillin 500 mg" would pop up on the screen. That would save me
having to script so many NDC's into the BMV. But I think that that is beyond
possibility right now - certainly beyond my capabilities Cindy

Jeff/Kimberly,
We had First Data Bank send us an Excel spreadsheet that had our NDC# in
one column, and the various other NDC#'s that might be used for that
same drug, with the NDC format used on that particular number. The
column headers were (CVMC is us)

CVMC Mnemonic
CVMC NDC with FDB matches (the NDC number in our drug dictionary)
NDC (from First Data Bank)
NDCFI (numeric that represents the type of NDC format)
Converted 5-4-2 Format (map that shows where the "filler zero" is placed
to make it 11 digits)
Original Format

We then created another column with a formula for determining all the
possible Alternate NDC numbers for each of our drugs. (One of our drug
mnemonics could have up to 20 rows of possible alternates).

Then, we scripted those into the drug dictionary using Scriptmate. We
had 30,000+ entries, so we created an executable from the Scriptmate
project, loaded it onto four pcs in our training room, divided up the
one giant spreadsheet into 4 smaller ones and then set each to running.
I think it took 1.5 days to load, running for 6+ hours a day.

We had Meditech load a new NDC format for the Phizer drugs (.EAN.128)
and programmed the scanners to deal with the UPC barcodes by ignoring
the first digit and reading the next ten.

>From there, it was manageable to use the Quick Add Alternate NDC number
when a new one came along.

Hope this helps.

Subject: NDC #'s for BMV

We are in the very initial stages of BMV implementation. When testing
the scanner on some bar codes from prepackaged unit dose drugs, I found
that they all lack the initial zero in the official 11 digit format.
Additionally, some of the bar codes I scanned have a prefix. Obviously,
none of them matched up with the correct 11 digit NDC number in my drug
dictionary which needs to kept perfect in order for fomulary service to
work. Is there any way to program a scanner to be compatible with the
standard NDC number format? Please don't tell me that I must use the Add
Alt. NDC# routine to add these bogus NDC's for every single drug in the
dictionary. Thanks.
