Sorry, but I'd have to disagree with most of this post. Infection control
could surely be an issue, but letting someone bring in their laptop from home
would obviate this concern. From a medical viewpoint, sometimes "resting" the
mind is the worst way to recover from an injury or illness, it is not
physically strenous to use a computer, and if you allow them to watch TV or
read a newspaper, they are being exposed to the same stressors that the
internet would expose them to.
As far as not being a hotel, that is true, but customer service is much more of
a focus than it has been in the past, which means thinking more like a hotel is
going to result in higher patient satisfaction levels.

We absolutely do not do this, for many many reasons. We don't provide
computers, since Infection Control would be a major issue. AND, more
importantly, patients are here to get well. We are a hospital, not a
hotel. Once they are well, they can go home, and get back on their
computer, but while they are here, they need to rest their minds and bodies
to get well. Trying to control access to certain websites would be next to
impossible. Can you imagine the ramifications if our patients access
illegal or immoral websites on the hospital's internet link? What if the
patient accessed information that triggered a heart attack, or ??? . Could
the family sue us for allowing the patient to get on the internet?

Best of luck if you choose to go down this road.
