Randy- We are Magic 5.4 here at Good Shepherd Medical Center. We have
several departments on CWS which include: Medical Imaging (all
modalities), Infusion Therapy, Sleep Lab, Cardio Diagnostics, Pulmonary
Services, Neurology, Speech Therapy, Pre-Admission Testing, Cardiac
Rehab, Pulmonary Rehab and Wound Care. Some of these departments are
scheduled by a Centralized Scheduling area (Medical Imaging,
Pre-Admission Testing, Cardio Diagnostics, Neurology and Speech
Therapy). However, some of these are not scheduled that way (Sleep Lab
and Pulmonary Services are scheduled in one area) (Cardiac Rehab and
Pulmonary Rehab are scheduled in one area) (Wound Care is scheduled by
Wound Care Department) (Infusion Therapy is scheduled ! by themselves). In
Infusion Therapy, you are scheduling patients whose therapy may take 2
hours for one patient and only 1 hour for another. The Nurses who work
in that area know their patients and can determine the length of time
that patient requires. Therefore, they schedule their own patients. In
Medical Imaging, most of the time an exam takes a certain defined amount
of time. You may just have to take in account when developing your
appointments to be specific to maybe pediatric patients, for example,
that may need more time allotted than an adult having the same exam.
We did not bring all of these departments on line at the same time. The
process of going from a book to the computer is a project in its own
right, depending upon how busy the departments are. It is a huge
transition to go from writing the information down to being on the phone
and on the computer at the same time. However, having the information
available to Re! gistration and Insurance Verification is just great!!
Our registrat ion staff registers from scheduling.

Good luck to you. You can contact me if you like if you need additional
information.

Thanks-
Elizabeth Ronning

Anyone willing to share information pertaining to their implementing a
Centralized Scheduling Department.  What are the pros and cons?   Has it
worked?  Was it! received well by Medical Staff?  What departments do you
schedule for?    Any information would be appreciated.  We are
definitely going forward with this endeavor.  We presently use CWS, MSM
but everything is decentrailzed.  Multiple departments scheduling their
own.
