We are again looking at how to best meet JCAHO’s
requirements for violence/ abuse making sure we screen appropriately. The Standard is “patients who may be
victims of abuse or neglect are assessed”. The hospital develops or
adopts criteria for identifying victims in each of the following situations:
physical assault, rape, sexual, molestation, domestic abuse, elder neglector
abuse, child neglect or abuse. 1. What
actual question or questions do you use to screen your patients upon admission
to the hospital: Do you ask the same questions for inpatient and
outpatient? 2. Do you use
the same questions for all populations (peds, maternity, med/surg, ER)? 3. How do you
adjust the question for the different age groups: pre school, school age,
adolescent, adult)? 4. What is
done with the information obtained, especially in ER and the outpatient
settings where you may not be able to have someone from social service see the
patient before they leave? 5. Have you been
through a recent JCAHO visit and do you have any suggestions related to this
standard? I would appreciate any of
you sharing your processes to meet this requirement? Jeanne Hesseling 1 630 208 4439 |
