My two cents; From a Medical Records person..... Two accounts -- Two separate encounters -- Two separate records.. (with some exceptions, ie: RCR accounts, enter visit dates & times) My guidance to registration staff, if the patient leaves the building = new account needs to be created; It becomes a legal issue, if your records indicate that a patient is on your premises/is a patient, but is not.... the facility is liable for the patient from "admit date & time to discharge date & time". It is a billing requirement that the bills be combined.... Administrative & Medical Records requirement that two accounts be created....
