Thanks Ann; I agree completely.  I've never been a major champion of the magic key just because it is so keystroke intensive.  By the time I'm back to where I started I've forgotten what I left the screen for in the first place........

To take this discussion to the next level, as an Analyst I not only run multiple sessions, but I have multiple monitors set up on my PC.  Yes, you can ALT-TAB to go between sessions, but I'll tell you, for building CDSs, there's no better way than to have the Group Response Dictionary and Query Dictionary open on one monitor, and the CDS screen on the other.  I can add Group Responses REAL TIME while building queries, and build QUERIES real time while creating CDSs.  Not only that, I can open the same CDS in TEST on one monitor and LIVE on the other to keep them in synch (although we're going to be using Summit Healthcare's In-Synch to keep our dictionaries straight).  Using ALT-C and ALT-V on the workstation I can copy queries, macros, etc easily from screen to screen or directory to directory.

From my perspective, the price of a video card that supports multiple monitors and the price of a second monitor is FAR paid back by the increased productivity I realize.

Just my 2 cents.

Actually, no.  When doing clinical documentation with 2 sessions, once
you've opened the 2 forms, you can click from one session to the other
with a single mouse click, going back and forth as many times as you
need.  With a magic key, you have to enter a number of steps to actually
get to and open the form you want to check, then exit out of the same
number of steps to get back to your current form, and would need to
repeat this process over and over again if you wanted to check more than
one field.  If the nurse is doing a system assessment, then they want to
check any abnormal result against the previous document - is the
patient's breathing getting worse or better; is the temp. going up or
down; is the wound changing in size or appearance, etc. etc.  They may
need to pop back and forth multiple times to be able to do this
comparison, and having to enter through all of the steps of a magic key
is not all that efficient when the need is repetitive.

But you could have similar functionality with a custom Magic
Key menu, without the need for multiple log-ins. mine is set
up to have links to other modules so I could access BAR, OE,
or any other module I have access to even if my primary
screen is within LAB.

It depends on how you have your documentation set up.  It
can be useful to look back and see what the patient's
previous status was in a given area while you are
documenting current status for that area.  If you don't want
to have the queries default in and you have attributes
attached to the queries that display the answers as
"pop-ups", then opening the old document is the quickest way
to look at the previous response to that question.  Two
log-ons would allow for this functionality.

We do not allow multiple logons. However, I may not have
encountered the situation that prompted your users to
request it.

Just a quick question, is anyone that is using NUR for
documentation allowing multiple user logon's?  We have a
request to have more than one logon for nurses and wonder
what others are doing before we make any decisions. Thanks!
