Can anyone tell me or point me to a regulation regarding a patient who leaves one in-patient facility to another in-patient facility and then returns to the original facility? We frequently have patients who leave our facility for a surgery at another in-patient facility and then return to our facility. Right now we treat these as LOA patients, rather than a discharge and new admission, if they return to us within 3 days. I am arguing that this is not correct, but can not find any regulation that spells it out. Any information is appreciated, Tim Brady Director of Information Systems Mt.
