Tom:

BizTalk really seems to be an interface engine. At $29,999 per CPU,
it's not a particularly inexpensive one. The question is why would
we want BizTalk or any other interface engine if SQL Server 2005
integration tools could do the job at $ 0.00 additional cost?

Hi,

Microsoft's version of Quovadax is BizTalk.

I am wondering what an interface engine like Cloverleaf or Summit
has to offer that isn't available in SQL Server 2005 Integration=20
Services.
=20
I am very familiar with the predecessor of this product (Data
Transformation Services) and the old CAI interface engine (now
Neon I believe). SQL Server DTS packages offer much of the
same functionality that an interface engine would offer. This=20
new product from Microsoft seems to be even more robust and more=20
feature rich.
=20
The main item that may be missing is a message store and forward queue.=20
However, linking to Microsoft's messaging services may be the answer
to that issue.
=20
Interface engines are quite expensive and require a pretty high level
of expertise to use effectively. Given Meditech's pricing structure
for their interfaces, we haven't been able to cost justify buying one.
On the other hand, as owners of Meditech's DR, we have SQL Server and
its built in tools available.
=20
It would be interesting to hear the pros and cons from someone with
knowledge=20
of both interface engines and SQL Server Integration services as
solutions
to meeting interfacing needs.

Jennifer,
As long as Cloverleaf has been mentioned, the other major player in =3D
interface engines is Sun/Seebeyond's Java CAPS/EGate/datagate. This is a
=3D
full featured, highly scalable product that has done everything we asked
=3D
of it. We use E-gate 4.5.3. It runs well on windows 2000, and also runs
=3D
on UNIX and other operating systems. You can program it in Java. There
=3D
is a mature market of consulting resources available.=3D20

At Blanchard Valley Regional Healthcare we utilize Quovadx Cloverleaf.
I can't remember how much it costs. We have had extremely high success
rate with this engine. It handles every need we have, on top of being
extremely reliable running on Windows 2000 server. You do have the
option of running it on several different linux/unix brands. Quovadx
comes highly recommended from me!
