Moira / Michael-
I have seen "non-Pharmacist" order entry work very well at several sites -
not just PHA Techs, but Unit Clerks doing after-hours order entry for eMAR.
The key is the backend verification process - a Pharmacist can verify orders
4-5 times faster than entering them. Sure, that depends on clean orders
being entered without edits required. Allergy/interaction/duplicate flags
are seen in verification. I recommend looking at the "Process Patient
Activity" for verification. I also recommend formatting a special Profile
to display during that process with a header including current diet, etc.

Honestly, we have all worked with Pharmacist that scar us at order entry too
- it all about training. Train your techs the way you want the orders put
in and enjoy the benefits of getting out on the floor or something other
than sitting on that stool in the basement - OH MY GOSH, WHAT A CONCEPT!

Kevin.

-Does your hospital allow technicians to enter unverified medication orders
that are then verified by a pharmacist?
-If so, what is the work flow, i.e., what happens when an allergy is flagged
or a drug interaction warning appears?
-Are techs allows to enter all types of orders -TPNs, chemos, etc?
-Have you found this to be an efficient method of med order entry, or is it
just as fast for a pharmacist to enter the orders from scratch?
-Do you use this as a training tool for new pharmacists, teaching them order
entry techniques?
-Have you tried this process and discontinued? If so, for what reasons?

I have been asked to send this to the list serve for one of my pharmacist.
