I don't know how many of you have seen it yet, but ASCP communicated the governor of Michigan signed a bill April 9, REQUIRING a GFR for all patients having creatinine testing. I understand Illinois, Connecticut, and Maryland are among 12 states and the federal government (source: National Kidney Foundation) considering similar legislation. While there is controversy over a required estimated GFR for everyone over 18, you can bet the politicians will run with the idea whether they have all the facts or not related to its appropriateness. Several states have adopted a more reasonable approach, calling for a taskforce to develop cost-effective kidney disease screening, diagnosis, and treatment plan (Alabama, Mississippi, & South Carolina). Be sure to follow legislation in your state to make sure you stay compliant with state laws. Federal changes usually get communicated better than state law changes.
