Alice, I haven't seen a tool but some issues I've seen that you might want to consider addressing in your survey are:
- time/efficiency/workflow. Scanning patients and medications will add time to the med pass process. While I appreciate the safety thing immensely, there's nothing else about it that speaks to me as a bedside nurse.
- misconceptions. The safety created by scanning does not replace the need for the nurse to know what medications are for and what their side effects are (you might say "duh!", but believe me, it can be a problem)
- pre-existing process and nursing creativity. If nurses are using an incorrect med pass process (for example, they open meds somewhere other than at the bedside), BMV won't fix that. Nurses will find ways to adapt BMV to their present, incorrect process
- nurses' understanding of legalities, eg falsification of documentation (a form of professional misconduct), or the possible consequences of intentionally bypassing a safety structure
I'll bet you and your nursing leadership team have plans for inservices in advance of your implementation, so that your nurses understand better why the country is moving to BMV. But your nurse leaders might also want to conduct a hands-on assessment of what medication administration processes the nursing staff are using now, in an effort to identify practice issues that already exist, prior to adding BMV/EMAR to the mix. They might be surprised at what they find. Checking on process following implementation would also be a good thing to do. Good luck.

I am wondering if anyone has sent out a survey to the staff as to what their perception is regarding BMV/emar. I would like to see what I have facing me with this project as far as getting the staff to buy into the Safety issue. Can someone please share their survey with me.This message, together with any attachments, is intended only for the use of the individual or entity to which it is Addressed and may contain information that is confidential and prohibited from disclosure.
