Actually, I believe the purpose is this. If you have a scanning process
that uses a label, and you don't want staff to be able to use that label
in place of the armband, you simply add the extra character to that
barcode and follow the scanner manufacturer instructions for telling the
scanner to disregard the extra character.#��

am not real familiar with how to configure the bar code scanner
so maybe there is a way.

If you use the barcode function in NPR and have the barcode be the Patient
number for this visit, then it will be accepted and understood any place
that is asking the patient prompt.
In HCA we had a fix put into eMAR that keeps track of whether the
patient was scanned or not. I can't say if it is available in
mainstream or not.
