Hello L'ers! I have a question which, because it is relatively new, I have not been able to find an answer to. Our EDM and PCS groups need to document Outpatients with a start and end time for IV meds. New Medicare regulations for 2007 require this information to be captured and coders are required to extract the correct CPT codes for the med based upon the duration.
We have come up with the solution to have each module enter these on their assessments which can then be seen by both PCS and EDM. The problem is that when they enter a start time, they may not enter the stop time for a particular infusion until much later and the time that they do eventually enter may be incorrect. Now, the coders take that start and end time to determine the correct CPT code based on the duration. The problem lies with the issue of an incorrect time being entered for a 10 minute IV push, for example, in which case an inaccurate CPT code will be entered. The only other solution we could find was to have the start AND end times entered at the time the assessment is created. While this is not an ideal fix, it is the only one we know of. With this new Medicare regulation so new, has anybody else run into this situation and what have you found to be the best solution to this? Thanks in advance for any assistance provided!
