You need a second copy for backup and DR purposes, but that can be paper
or electronic.  Just make sure to have a policy backing up whichever
choice you go with.  It's hard to get rid of the originals, so we keep
them a couple of years before getting rid of them.

After scanning and archiving, what are you doing with your paper charts?
Storage is getting very expensive and our Medical Records Director is
looking for alternatives.  We currently use Valco and can see the
complete chart through PCI, but in the past our previous directors have
insisted that we store the paper as backup.
