Apologies that this is slightly off topic, but we're desperate for outside input!
Our institution has moved to personal intranet logons from which Meditech as well as several other repositories of patient data, e.g. our hospital census sheet, are available. The network account either locks or logs off after a period of inactivity depending on unit choice. Previously, most clinical users entered the intranet with a group account that remained up indefinitely, then logged onto Meditech from there. Departments and units that share computers are burdened by the need to log off our intranet then all the way back into Meditech between users or, alternately, are locked out of computers on units that chose to lock accounts. We haven't been able to give users within a department the ability to 'unlock' others in their Windows organizational unit, though we've tried. How have other hospitals met the need to have a 'unique name and/or number' (HIPAA Regs, 164.312) to track a user on the intranet? Is there a creative way to use a group network account in lab, for example, and still meet HIPAA standards? Many thanks, Kim Corrette, RN Clinical IS Analyst Bartlett Regional Hospital Juneau, AK (907)796-8838
