I agree that no decision on equipment for EMAR/BMV/POC Documentation
will be regarded by all clinical staff as a good decision.

There is no one device that fits each caregiver's needs/role. If you
give them a Cadillac they will complain about the color.

Now, when we did EMAR/BMV many years ago, we were a pilot site and we
used Stinger COW's (older models) with wired scanners and med cabinets
attached to the COW's.

It worked fine...But were there complaints (oh yes!)

1. There too heavy
2. Fatigue during the shift pushing the cart around for meds (they could
cart anywhere they wanted except for meds, had to be done in room next
to patient).
3. Wireless issues occasionally
4. Standing in line at dispensing machine
5. Change (it is amazing that a nurse can give meds for 20yrs and as
soon as you interject a COW and scanner, they do not know how to pass a
med (i.e. the 5 rights)).

Need I go on...?

I do understand that change is difficult, but so are the 30,000 deaths a
year in US Hospitals from medication errors. If you mother or child were
in the hospital, I think you would be happy to see that computer and
scanner.

Now, can companies design better devices, sure? Will they make everyone
happy-no way...?

Just my opinion, which everyone has one.

Thanks,

Subject: Re: [MEDITECH-L] COWs vs. PCs in the room for BMV

Hi Ed,

I keep seeing various versions of this question asked and I finally
feel compelled to add my two cents worth! Anyone who believes that
either a COW or a PC in the room is a good solution for nurses using BMV
either does not have "RN" behind their name or does not understand the
needs of today's bedside nurse! This is not intended to be a slam on
anyone asking the question..... but rather is an expression of
frustration over the lack of adequate hardware solutions to meet the
demanding needs of nurses!

Any hardware that is anything less than small, very lightweight, easily
mobile, very durable, water-proof, cleanable, and fully capable of both
scanning barcodes and enabling full documentation in an easy to use,
simple, and quick format..... it NOT adequate! This, in my humble
opinion, is the biggest unmet need in the modern world of nursing.

(If you know of hardware solutions meeting the above criteria....
PLEASE let me know!)

Thanks,
Kenny Whiteside

Hi,

I wondered if anyone has any thoughts about using COWs vs. PCs in
the room for BMV? We have purchased COWs which gives us the mobile
option. I was wondering if other BMV sites prefer having PCs in the
patient room for BMV?

Thanks,

Ed
