Jeff
I have to disagree as I find the MM.PHA functionality very valuable.
An accurate perpetual inventory allows you to:
-reduce quantity on hand to 'just in time' which can be as much as a 30%
reduction
-anticipate stock outs before it happens
-do all purchasing in 20 minutes or less
-accurately track top dollar item usage
-provide for Case Costing
-and is esential for our hospital budgeting and funding accountability
in Canada.

We use it here. PHA to MM.PHA. These is little maintenance in Meditech
on the PHA side once you get it going. However there is considerable
time spent on tracking low cost items and reconciling. You can not use
NONFORMULARY dictionary in PHA because it does not support perpetual.
Your IV labels will need adjusted because you now have to enter the
1000mg vial and the 500 mg vial for a 1500mg order to make the inventory
"correct". We do an annual inventory and adjust at that time.

This is my personal opinion, but it is not worth it. I find it hard to
believe that all the time and effort spent in chasing charges and
entering items is ever recovered from moving to this.

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] Re: Pharmacy Perpetual Inventory

The ever shrinking health care dollar is driving our need to know
exactly what procedures cost. With that in mind we are interested in
knowing whether anyone is utilizing the perpetual inventory link between
Pharmacy and Materials Management and the Cost Accounting module to
determine what are the true costs of procedures? We currently utilize
Omnicell dispensing machines and unit dose as much as possible, as we
utilize the BMV module. The medications are charged at the point of
removal from the Omnicell machines.

If you are utilizing it we would be interested in knowing:
1. When there is a discrepancy how is it resolved?
2. What is the expected time to build the dictionaries needed?
3. What is the true maintenance of the dictionary? (i.e. 1 FTE, less,
more)
4. Is anyone using the Cost Accounting and this link to determine costs,
or are there other means to accomplish this?
Any and all feedback would be appreciated regarding the positives and
negatives of pursuing the project.
Thank you
