We fought with this for a long time, but we finally made it a point that we are an IT department and we are receiving Patient information when we should not, not only is it a HIPPA violation, but I also made it a point that how did we know that we were entering the correct data, what if one of the stickers had the incorrect charge code hard-coded into it, how do I know that when I enter in 445xxxx that even though the sticker says its sterile gloves, it comes up when you scan it as sterilization, I know that is far off, but we had trouble with out charges for a while because some of the sticker numbers were changed to a different name, or something like that and things were not matching up, and so I don't think we should be responsible to know if what we are entering is correct or not, we are not clinical we are IT and we do not know that what we are putting is correct or not. So finally we were able to get each department to agree that there supply charges were their own responsibility and that they need to be in by 12 pm of each day. The ones we were collecting were MSP, SCU, and Behav and the now the midnight clerk enters these charges, we supplied them a bar code scanner, training, and then support afterwards if there was any trouble. We even got OR to put in there supply charges that was our largest department we use to receive supply charges from. OR currently is using BAR to enter in there charges, because we don't have all the supply charges built in the OE dictionary, but the med floors we just took a months worth of supply cards and entered all of those in OE and said we would deal with the stragglers when they come about. Eventually, I believe we would like for OR to enter them through OE, so that it depletes Materials Management module and it also will charge BAR. I know this is probably more than you wanted, but we just made it a patient confidentiality issue.
