Hi Frank
Yes, our pharmacist has requested the same thing for our labels. We
scan the NDC number from the original container into the BAR CODE IDENTIFIER on
the purchasing page on the formulary. This is scanned into the first entry, and
that is a CAVEAT. The first entry, no matter what it is, is printed on the
label. By our implementation, the first entry is supposed to be the barcode
from the original container.
We then wrote a smal NPR report of which only the select screen is used.
We scan the bar code from the label and from the original container. If they
match, the select screen clears for the next entry, otherwise a warning message
flashes indicating a mismatch and requires the operator to press OK before
further input will be allowed.
Our pharmacicst finds this very helpful, but the barcode on the label
also works with the manual debit and credit routines which is a bonus.
Attached is a listing of the validation program. It is fairly simple,
but it work.
Hope this Helps

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] Bar Code Match in PHA
Do any of you use a program to match bar codes on IV's (or other drugs) with bar
codes on labels? I'm thinking of the kind of program used in retail pharmacies
in which a bar code is generated on the prescription label with the drug's NDC,
which is subsequently scanned for a match with the bar code on the original
container for the drug. Typically the program produces a different tone for no
match as opposeed to match. The same principle can be applied to IV's that are
not compounded. A bar code of the NDC number on the label can be matched
electonically with the bar code on the bag. Are any of you doing it? If so,does
it require third-party software or are you doing it through Meditech. We are
Magic, soon to be 5.6. Thanks for your help in advance.
