The problem is that Doug Fisher stood on stage during the MeeGo Conference and said "MeeGo is better for X, Y and Z because we develop in the open". That included vendors, the community, the project and OEMs. It was repeatedly pointed out that open development, rather than just open source, is one of the differentiating factors upon which MeeGo competes with Android. If the primary corporate backer of MeeGo acts in a similar way to Google, with big reveals and closed development of new headline features, people from outside Intel will never be able to get involved and add value, *ensuring* they stay on the sidelines "whinging". If I was an OEM, I'd be annoyed; but I'm not. We should be glad we've got such a passionate community, but from a hobbyist point of view, open development is one of the draws of MeeGo. If project plans, new features, and scope are drawn up in smoky rooms and then just open sourced, I suspect a lot of hobbyists will look back at Android. Intel are going to have to work harder now, now that Nokia's strategy has changed. Previously some things were being forced into the open because two large companies were cooperating on the vast majority of the work. In future, it will be easier for old habits (such as conversations in the corridor) to decide the future of the project. Sucks to be Intel, but there's not a whole lot to like about this situation :-( Cheers, Andrew -- Andrew Flegg -- mailto:[email protected] | http://www.bleb.org/ Maemo Community Council member _______________________________________________ MeeGo-community mailing list [email protected] http://lists.meego.com/listinfo/meego-community http://wiki.meego.com/Mailing_list_guidelines
